The City of New York's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is seeking a highly skilled Veterinarian to join its Bureau of Veterinary and Pest Control Services. As a key member of the Division of Environmental Health, this individual will play a critical role in preventing and controlling illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks.
Key Responsibilities:- Advise and consult with veterinarians and public health officials on veterinary public health medicine issues.
- Monitor and investigate reported cases of animal bites and exposures, review health certificates and related documents.
- Conduct site visits to Animal Care Centers (ACC) shelter facilities, monitoring the status of animals and advising staff on veterinary matters.
- Develop and implement policies related to animal shelters.
- Conduct investigations of diseases at permitted animal holding facilities.
- Administer the department's Animal Handling Course veterinary module.
- Make recommendations and assist the Director in formulating services for ACC shelter operations.
- Possession of a valid New York State license to practice veterinary medicine.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Flexibility, adaptability, customer focus, and a commitment to high standards of excellence.
New York City residency is required within 90 days of appointment. However, city employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
