Job Summary
Tesla is seeking a highly skilled Manufacturing Engineer to join our team. As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will be responsible for developing equipment and processes that work seamlessly with cross-functional teams throughout the entire product launch lifecycle.
This role requires a hands-on engineer who can work closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Production, Maintenance, and External Vendors to take vehicle design changes and new vehicle designs from initial concepts through prototype development and into full production.
The position will be responsible for the complete ownership of welding assembly lines from conception to full rate proven. This will involve detailed design of the process and then realization of all design on the actual shop floor.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with Design Engineering to develop products that lend themselves to streamlined and robust manufacturing methods with industry-best safety, quality, rate, and cost.
- Support Tesla's factory and facility teams to develop highly-efficient and optimized factory-level layout and take direct responsibility for exceeding market-leading dimensional quality and lead all activities towards this objective, including the development of GD&T strategies, quality control plans, and dimensional improvement plans.
- Lead the development of innovative and robust tooling design to achieve the process plan and GD&T strategy, working closely with Tesla's partner vendors to buy-off and deliver the final product.
- Drive the continued improvement of early project planning documents such as project timelines, Requests for Quotations, FMEA's, and Safety Risk Assessments.
- Lead the development and introduction of processes and equipment associated with early prototype builds and highlighting key process and equipment improvement opportunities throughout the prototype builds themselves.
- Work closely with Tesla's partner vendors to develop world-class production lines with unprecedented simplicity, density, speed, and automation and lead the installation, commissioning, and ramp of high-volume production lines, ensuring close collaboration with Tesla's partner vendors to deliver the line in the shortest possible time and lowest possible cost.
- Initiate and drive strategies to rapidly ramp the quality and rate of newly launched production lines to full capacity with a focus on maintaining the highest of safety standards throughout the ramp duration and build on the success of existing line layouts, processes, and tooling to further improve material flow, waste reduction, safety, and ergonomics by utilizing lean manufacturing best practices and structured problem-solving methodologies.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- 2+ years of related experience developing and launching complex assembly processes with a 'can-do' attitude, open-mindedness, and a strong desire to think 'outside the box.'
- The ability to take initiative, manage competing demands, collaborate closely with others, and remain positive in high-pressure environments.
- A demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and make data-based decisions, owning assignments and taking full accountability for their successful and timely delivery.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and assignments, coping with rapidly changing inputs, constraints, and priorities.
- Strong familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies such as DMAIC, 5 Whys, Fishbone, and 8D.
- Good understanding of BOMs, OEE, manufacturability, DFM, process design, process validation, assembly methods, design reviews, and cost reduction methodologies.
- Experience with AUTOCAD, CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, and other similar software/tools.
