The Surgical Nurse Specialist collaborates closely with surgical teams to ensure exceptional patient outcomes throughout surgical interventions.

This role requires in-depth knowledge of human anatomy, surgical practices, and comprehensive patient care, making the RNFA an essential asset in the operating room.

Core Responsibilities:

Pre-operative Duties:

Prepare the surgical environment and necessary equipment.

Position and ready the patient for surgical procedures.

Verify that all required instruments and supplies are sterile and accessible.

Intra-operative Responsibilities:

Provide hands-on support to the surgeon during operations.

Manage tissues, organs, and sutures as instructed by the lead surgeon.

Anticipate the needs of the surgical team while ensuring a sterile environment.

Post-operative Care:

Assist in wound closure and the application of dressings.

Facilitate the transfer of patients to recovery and provide necessary post-operative support.

Monitor patient status and communicate any changes to the surgical team.

Team Collaboration:

Engage in effective communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other surgical personnel.

Accurately document surgical procedures in patient records.

Participate in patient education and discharge planning as needed.

Continuous Professional Development:

Keep abreast of the latest advancements in surgical techniques and patient care methodologies.

Maintain RNFA certification through ongoing education and training.

Qualifications and Skills:

Education:
Graduate from an accredited nursing program; valid RN licensure.

Certification:
Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA) credential is mandatory.

Experience:
Generally requires several years of nursing experience in perioperative or surgical environments.

Skills:

Profound understanding of surgical anatomy and procedures, exceptional communication and teamwork abilities, capacity to perform under pressure in a dynamic setting.

Certification: Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant.
