Job Summary

The Director of Student Health Services will serve as the educational and administrative leader of Health Services, working collaboratively to lead and nurture Health Services staff and communicate effectively with members of the community, colleagues in non-public schools, and district departments.

Essential Job Functions
  • Direct the School Health Services Program personnel.
  • Lead program management, including strategic planning, implementation, management, and evaluation of the school health program.
  • Oversee the activities of health professionals and support employees.
  • Facilitate the training and continuing education of employees.
  • Provide direction and support to health services employees to ensure effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Select, train, develop, and evaluate health services employees and initiate personnel actions in accordance with departmental policies and organization philosophy.
  • Provide leadership to others to develop, review, and revise protocols, procedures, and guidelines related to the prevention and control of health problems, accidents, and injuries and the maintenance of a healthy school environment.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of direct reports.
  • Analyze School Health Services Program performance and outcome measures to improve service delivery and student outcomes.
  • Advocate for funding for school health services at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Manage budgets, including School-Based Health Center, health advocacy, and other grants as received.
  • Lead school nurse initiatives related to the development and implementation of electronic health records systems and tracking, which meet professional standards of care, create efficiency, are clearly defined, and demonstrate positive outcomes for students.
  • Advocate with the state and federal government to improve processes to bill Medicaid and other insurance plans for school health services.
  • Collaborate with members of the school and community in the delivery of health and social services and utilize knowledge of school-community health systems and resources to ensure access, continuity, and coordination of these services.
  • Lead the expansion, integration, and coordination of behavioral health interventions. Assist in developing an evaluation plan that measures interventions and outcomes.
  • Supervise office operations to maintain adequate staffing and minimize risk.
  • Oversee contracts with local universities in providing clinical opportunities for nursing students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
    • Two years of recent, relevant nursing, program development, and management experience.
  • Preferred Qualification:
    • Master's degree in nursing.
  • Special Qualifications:
    • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
    • Professional School Nurse Certificate.
    • CPR and first aid certification or the acquisition within 6 months of hire.

  • Skills in organization and leadership.
  • Ability to work with computers and have working knowledge of Windows-based programs (word processing).
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with diverse populations.
  • Ability to deal with the multiplicity of an urban community population.
  • Ability to work with confidential information and maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to be a team leader, planning and managing multiple projects and budgets.

Physical Demands

The work is medium work, which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear (in a quiet or noisy environment). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust/focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to moderate.
