Overview:

At MIT Lincoln Laboratory, we are at the forefront of designing, prototyping, analyzing, and testing advanced laser communication systems tailored for diverse governmental applications. Our dedicated research team is focused on developing innovative techniques to counteract signal power fluctuations caused by atmospheric turbulence and to minimize wavefront distortions.

We engage in comprehensive atmospheric modeling and simulation, creating precise acquisition, tracking, and pointing subsystems that facilitate highly directional, low-probability-of-intercept communication links.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the design and development of GN&C (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) subsystems for laser communication terminals across various platforms, including orbital, airborne, and terrestrial.
  • Contribute to the design, implementation, and validation of GN&C algorithms.
  • Collaborate with fellow controls engineers within a Pointing, Acquisition, and Tracking (PAT) team to develop embedded software, testing infrastructure, and software tools essential for the design, construction, and evaluation of laser communication systems.
  • Play a pivotal role in transitioning innovative algorithm development from research and development into production.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics, or a Master’s degree with over 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in algorithm development using MATLAB and/or C/C+.
  • Experience in the development and testing of sensors and control actuators.
  • Hands-on experience with GN&C software and hardware implementation and testing.
  • Familiarity with state-estimation algorithms and Kalman filters.
  • Strong understanding of digital signals and systems, including FIR/IIR filters, LTI system models, and Fourier transforms.
  • Ability to manage risks effectively and apply lean software development methodologies.
  • Excellent technical communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of design experience in relevant fields.
  • Experience with software verification and hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Background in embedded software development for Linux and/or real-time operating systems.
  • Familiarity with the complete development lifecycle of GN&C subsystems.
  • Knowledge of optical or RF communication systems.
