The Office of External Affairs plays a pivotal role in managing the agency's public interactions, from promoting healthy lifestyles to addressing urgent health crises. This office is responsible for crafting impactful campaigns, maintaining a strong online presence, and managing media relations and governmental communications.

Position Summary:

The Deputy Press Secretary will report directly to the Press Secretary and collaborate closely with the Communications and Government Affairs teams. This role involves planning and executing public speaking engagements and media interviews, as well as overseeing a team member focused on research and logistics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Offer strategic advice to senior leadership during press engagements and attend community forums where media presence is expected.
  • Coordinate the organization of community outreach events and media activities, including press briefings and town hall discussions.
  • Conduct thorough internal research on public health topics and work alongside community organizations and city departments to formulate effective media and communication strategies.
  • Create a focused media outreach plan targeting specific community demographics.
  • Stay informed about local media channels, including community publications that serve at-risk populations.
  • Consult with the Commissioner on communication strategies, assisting in the development of messaging and presentation techniques.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to enhance the Commissioner's visibility through various platforms and events.
  • Ensure all press communications adhere to the agency's standards for professionalism and accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or public relations, along with five years of relevant experience in public relations, journalism, or advertising, including two years in a supervisory role; or
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above. Graduate coursework may substitute for up to one year of experience, but candidates must possess at least two years of supervisory experience in the relevant fields.
  • Salary - $95,000

  • Creative thinker with exceptional writing skills, capable of translating complex policy concepts into engaging and persuasive language.
  • Strong judgment, editing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Capacity to manage multiple deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Previous experience in government roles is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
  • Availability for after-hours work during emergencies is required.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage various projects under tight deadlines.
  • Contribute meaningfully to strategic discussions in fast-paced situations.
  • Edit and review colleagues' work to ensure consistency and quality of messaging.

Additional Information:

  • This position is grant-funded.
  • Preference may be given to candidates residing in the tri-state area.
  • Flexibility to work outside of regular hours during emergencies is expected.
