The Office of External Affairs plays a crucial role in managing the agency's public interactions, focusing on promoting healthy behaviors, advancing public health policies, and responding to health emergencies. Under the leadership of the Press Secretary, the Assistant Press Officer will cultivate collaborative relationships with various city agencies and community stakeholders to develop proactive communication strategies that align with the agency's public health campaigns.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Press Officer will report directly to the Press Secretary and collaborate closely with the Communications and Government Affairs teams. This role involves planning and executing media engagements, public speaking events, and managing logistical support for these initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic advice to senior leadership during press engagements and attend community events where media presence is anticipated.
  • Coordinate the organization of community outreach events and media activities, including press conferences and town hall meetings.
  • Conduct thorough research on public health initiatives and collaborate with community organizations to devise effective media and communication strategies.
  • Develop targeted outreach plans for specific community demographics.
  • Maintain awareness of local media outlets, including community publications that serve at-risk populations.
  • Advise the Commissioner on communication strategies, assisting in crafting messages and refining delivery.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the Commissioner's visibility through speaking engagements and partnerships.
  • Ensure all press communications adhere to the agency's standards for professionalism and accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or public relations, along with five years of relevant experience in public relations or journalism, including two years in a supervisory role; or
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above. Graduate coursework may substitute for up to one year of experience, but candidates must possess at least two years of supervisory experience in the field.
  • Salary - $95,000

  • This position is grant-funded.
  • Preference may be given to candidates residing in the tri-state area.
