The Office of External Affairs plays a pivotal role in shaping the agency's public interactions, focusing on awareness campaigns, health promotion, and emergency response strategies. Under the supervision of the Press Secretary, the Assistant Press Officer will cultivate partnerships with various city agencies and community stakeholders to develop proactive communication strategies that align with the agency's public health initiatives.

Position Summary:

The Assistant Press Officer will report directly to the Press Secretary and collaborate closely with the Communications and Government Affairs teams to orchestrate speaking engagements and media interactions. This role will also involve overseeing a team member responsible for research, logistics, and drafting communications as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic counsel to senior leadership during press engagements and community events.
  • Coordinate the execution of community outreach events and media activities, including press conferences and town hall meetings.
  • Conduct thorough research on public health initiatives and collaborate with community organizations to devise effective media and public relations strategies.
  • Formulate a targeted outreach plan to engage specific community demographics.
  • Maintain awareness of local media landscapes, including community-focused publications.
  • Advise the Commissioner on communication tactics and assist in crafting compelling narratives and presentations.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the visibility of the Commissioner's initiatives through various platforms and engagements.
  • Ensure all press communications meet the agency's standards for professionalism and accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations, or a related field, coupled with five years of relevant experience in public relations, journalism, or advertising, including two years in a supervisory or consultative role; or
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above, with graduate studies in relevant fields potentially substituting for up to one year of experience.

  • Contribute constructively to strategic discussions in fast-paced settings.
  • Review and refine colleagues' work to ensure consistency and quality.

Additional Information:

  • This position is grant-funded.
  • Preference may be given to candidates residing in the tri-state area.
  • Flexibility to work non-business hours during emergencies is required.
