Position Summary: The Marine Coatings Specialist is tasked with the preparation and cleaning of metal surfaces prior to painting. This includes the removal of contaminants such as dirt, grease, rust, and scale. The role also involves masking areas that do not require painting and applying coatings to various components of the ship, both internally and externally. The specialist will prepare preservation materials in line with Product Data Sheets and will conduct inspections of painted areas, performing touch-ups as necessary. Additional related responsibilities may be assigned.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up necessary tools and equipment for surface preparation at the job site.
- Prepare surfaces for painting.
- Establish spray painting equipment for coating applications.
- Mix paint materials according to Product Data Sheets and apply coatings appropriately.
- Perform hand painting and/or spray painting in designated areas, ensuring quality through inspections and touch-ups.
- Operate elevated equipment to prepare surfaces and apply coatings in high areas.
- Maintain cleanliness in assigned work areas during and after job completion.
- Undertake additional tasks as directed by the Project Lead.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma required.
- 1-3 years of experience in brush and spray paint application.
- SSPC C-12 Certification is mandatory.
- NPBI Certification is required.
- OSHA 10 certification or the ability to obtain it is necessary.
- Ability to identify paint application requirements and necessary equipment.
- Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and practices in Coatings/Preservation is essential.
- Must be able to qualify for respirator use and wear appropriate PPE throughout the work shift.
- This position supports a U.S. Government Contract requiring U.S. Citizenship, access to shipyards, a background investigation, and passing a drug screening.
Work Environment: This role is conducted in a shipyard setting.
Travel Requirements: Some travel may be necessary.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this position include the ability to work at heights, climb stairs and ladders, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in standing, kneeling, and crouching positions. Safety is a critical focus.
Work Authorization/Security Clearance:
- Successful completion of a background check.
- Passing a drug test and physical examination.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
