Job Summary: We are seeking a PRN Respiratory Therapist to provide high-quality patient care and contribute to the success of our Respiratory Care team at Sovah Health Martinsville.

About the Role: As a Respiratory Therapist, you will be responsible for examining patients with breathing-related conditions, conducting diagnostic testing, and developing treatment plans in collaboration with physicians. Your expertise will be essential in delivering and assessing response to ordered therapy, monitoring patient condition, and evaluating respiratory care policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Measure lung capacity and analyze blood samples using a blood gas analyzer.
  • Deliver and assess response to ordered therapy per plan of care.
  • Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate.
  • Evaluate respiratory care policies and procedures based on patient outcomes, current research, and best practices.
  • Respond to codes and calls for emergent assistance.
  • Educate patients and families about their illness and provide information about community support groups and resources.
  • Monitor, receive, stock, and distribute respiratory care supplies and medical gas cylinders.
  • Maintain storage areas with required supply levels and equipment.
  • Disassemble, clean, and sterilize equipment, and perform preventative maintenance and calibration of machines.
  • Provide diagnostic and therapeutic interventions on physician-prescribed patients with acute and chronic cardio-pulmonary dysfunction.
  • Coordinate and participate in the administration of medical gas therapy, humidity therapy, aerosol therapy, and other respiratory care procedures.
  • Perform twelve-channel electrocardiograph examinations.
  • Perform complex respiratory care procedures, including calibrating, setting up, and monitoring of mechanical ventilators, blood gas analyzers, and other equipment.
  • Evaluate, initiate, monitor, and wean patients from mechanical ventilation.
  • Perform Holter Monitoring set-up, instruction, and analysis.
  • Participate as a member of the cardiac Arrest Team responding to emergency calls.
  • Provide clinical instruction on the proper use of equipment to hospital staff and patients.
  • Set up and perform arterial catheterization.
  • Transport patients requiring manual ventilatory support or supplemental oxygen to various locations within the hospital.
  • Assist in the orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Perform simple portable spirometry.
  • Post charges into the hospital information system.
  • Participate in the department's Quality Assurance Program.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care Program, with an A.A.S. degree, Certification of Graduation, or equivalent.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of critical care experience, including hemodynamic monitoring, bronchoscopy assistance, mechanical ventilation set-up, management, and patient care assessment.
  • One year of routine respiratory care experience.
  • Graduation from an Associate Degree level program can be substituted for one year of experience.

Certifications:

  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • Licenses: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
  • Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support.
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT).
