Position Overview

  • The Mechanical Assembly Specialist will report directly to the Manufacturing Supervisor and will be responsible for planning, organizing, and executing all stages of machine assembly. This role involves collaboration with the engineering team and Project Managers to ensure all components are assembled correctly to enhance system efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize, plan, and execute all stages of machine assembly
  • Assemble, troubleshoot, modify, and install custom-designed machinery
  • Integrate purchased mechanical components, manufactured parts, and sub-assemblies to create automated machinery for specialized applications
  • Conduct precise alignments and setups of mechanical systems, ensuring the integrity of configurations
  • Install pneumatic components and subsystems according to provided schematics and specifications, plumbing, testing, and optimizing system performance for cycle time and equipment durability
  • Identify technical issues with supplied materials, components, and equipment
  • Detect and rectify mechanical deficiencies in the assembly process and accurately document modifications
  • Collaborate with engineering, electrical, and controls teams to ensure project completion
  • Participate in equipment disassembly and packaging at the initial assembly site, and reassemble and test at customer locations as necessary
  • Identify all tools, fasteners, and equipment needed to complete tasks efficiently and work with the Project Manager to secure all necessary materials promptly
  • Lead the machine debugging process
  • Follow company safety protocols to maintain a safe working environment for all employees

Required Competencies

  • Journeyman experience or related background in toolmaking/machine assembly
  • Proven experience in constructing equipment utilizing technologies such as robotic systems, high-speed indexing (dial, indexing chain, walking beam, etc.), pneumatic actuators, servo motors, and hydraulics
  • Familiarity with modern electrical control technologies as they relate to automated machinery (e.g., PLCs, HMIs, safety devices, and instrumentation)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capabilities related to machinery and equipment
  • Proficient in operating milling machines, lathes, and surface grinders
  • Ability to weld common metals (MIG/TIG) relevant to machine assembly is advantageous
  • Skilled in using rigging equipment, including cranes and forklifts
  • Knowledgeable about Machinery Safeguarding Principles and Standards applicable to production work cells, with the ability to identify and correct deficiencies
  • Good understanding of pneumatic/hydraulic control circuits
  • Willingness to work overtime as required
  • Assist with equipment installation and startup at customer sites as needed
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under tight deadlines; flexibility and adaptability to work extended hours or alternate shifts when project schedules require

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently lift weights of 50-75 pounds
  • Regularly carry tools to workstations
  • Often stand for extended periods; frequently required to walk
  • Consistently bend, stoop, reach, twist, crawl under/over, push/pull
  • Regularly climb ladders and work in confined spaces

Educational Background

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience Requirements

  • Required: 5+ years of experience in machine assembly, preferably in the automotive sector, with experience in a high-speed manufacturing environment being a plus
