Senior Vehicle Mechanic

Shelby County Public Schools is seeking a highly skilled Senior Vehicle Mechanic to join our team. As a Senior Vehicle Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing repair, maintenance, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, and clutches in District vehicles, including buses, passenger vehicles, trucks, and grounds and maintenance equipment.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform journey-level diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, rear ends, starters, generators, brakes, clutches, carburetors, electrical assemblies, and other mechanical assemblies.
- Inspect buses and other automotive vehicles to assure compliance with health and safety standards and regulations.
- Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate operation and repair of engines and electrical and automotive systems and equipment.
- Inspect, adjust, and reline brakes; balance and align wheels; change oil and rotate tires; fit pistons and rings and calibrate engine parts to meet established specifications.
- Perform road tests to evaluate malfunctions, needed repairs, or repairs performed.
- Prepare and maintain records of safety inspections conducted on student transportation vehicles as assigned; maintain records of work performed, including hours and materials purchased and used.
- Assist other maintenance personnel as assigned.
- Operate engine and electrical diagnostic equipment, microcomputer, ARC and gas welders, soldering gun, air jacks, fork lift, engine hoists, grinders, steam cleaner, high pressure washer, meters, gauges, hydraulic press, drill press, and a variety of power and hand tools.
- Arrange contract work by private garages.
- Determine placement of equipment being used.
- Evaluate and assess the stocking and purchasing of parts.
- Determine priority of mechanical work to be performed; organize, layout, assign, and review work to be performed by mechanics.
- Evaluate quantity and quality control of work being performed.
- Evaluate and assess needed equipment repairs.
- Evaluate and assess training that may be needed to further efficiency of the shop.
- Ensure prompt compliance of all recall and safety notices.
- Schedule all bus inspections and repairs and verify that proper bus inspection/repair is done per regulations, and proper equipment is available at all times.
- Inspect monthly interior and exterior of buses (non-mechanical).
- Train, prioritize, plan, assign, and review the work of assigned mechanics; prepare and maintain related records.
- High School Diploma or G-E-D certificate.
- Valid Kentucky commercial Class B driver's license, including passenger endorsement.
- School Bus Inspector Certification by KDE.
- Must pass physical examination each school year.
- 10 years experience in general automotive repairs preferred.
- Hold Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification in diesel engines and in four (4) other areas related to medium/heavy trucks or school buses.
- Must pass driving record check.
The Senior Vehicle Mechanic will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent deadlines and changing priorities. The position requires the ability to work independently with little direction and to meet schedules and timelines. The Senior Vehicle Mechanic must be able to lift heavy objects and observe health and safety regulations.
