Job Title: Ultrasound Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Ultrasound Engineer to join our team at the University of Washington's Applied Physics Laboratory. As a key member of our Cardiac Therapeutic Ultrasound Laboratory, you will be responsible for designing, fabricating, and developing novel ultrasound-based ablation medical devices for pre-clinical research and clinical translation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop new manufacturing techniques to fabricate devices using tools to machine and process raw materials to achieve ultrasound transducer design specifications.
  • Apply engineering techniques to rapidly fabricate intracardiac ultrasound ablation catheters, ensuring consistency to allow comparisons of use in large-animal scientific studies.
  • Develop methods for image-guided ultrasound therapy by integrating systems such as diagnostic ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and electro-anatomical mapping.
  • Perform scientific experiments and device characterization testing.
  • Contribute to publications and grant applications by designing protocols, describing methods applied, and explaining experimental findings in technical detail.
  • Participate in animal research by operating experimental ultrasound devices (no direct animal contact required).
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of regulatory standards and manufacturing practices applicable to therapeutic ultrasound devices and intra-cardiac catheters.
  • Oversee laboratory compliance.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or scientific discipline and two years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Ultrasound transducer and catheter fabrication from raw materials including soldering, irrigation, air-backing, sealing, and epoxy.
  • Electronic (comfort with network analyzer) and acoustic (comfort with hydrophones and radiation force balances) characterization of ultrasound transducers and piezo materials.
  • Manuscript preparation.
  • MATLAB programming.
  • CAD software skills.
Desired:
  • Grant submission preparation.
  • Regulatory background including FDA-level quality systems documentation processes and good labor & practices with pre-clinical workflow.
  • Large animal research methods.
  • Develop related intellectual property.
