POSITION OVERVIEW

The Senior Software Applications Engineer is responsible for the comprehensive analysis, design, evaluation, modification, testing, and deployment of enterprise-level systems across various functional domains. This role involves providing product usability assessments and support to development teams, including thorough investigations into applications and systems, security protocols, graphics, web interfaces, multimedia, and conversational user interactions. The engineer will create, assess, and refine prototypes to facilitate the ongoing development of software applications.

This position leads both internal and external clients in the development of Internet, intranet, or extranet-based applications, multimedia solutions, database interactions, and data modeling tools. The engineer will tackle complex challenges where in-depth analysis of situations or data is essential. The role requires sound judgment in selecting appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to achieve desired outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Directs and plans studies of applications, preparing design proposals that reflect cost, time, and alternative actions. Develops testing plans and protocols to evaluate system performance, along with design documents and results documentation. Conducts thorough analyses of system specifications and utilizes analysis/diagramming tools to depict business and technical processes. Formulates conversion and system implementation strategies and secures approval for system and programming documentation. Recommends enhancements in development, maintenance, and system standards while coordinating system upgrade activities. Trains user personnel on system conversion and implementation.
  • Creates, analyzes, and maintains tools that support and automate processes for software product releases. Collaborates with project teams to establish an appropriate build process and schedule, initiating the build and packaging process while managing source code control and ensuring software registry and delivery.
  • Provides technical leadership in the development of web service applications and the analysis of business requirements for both intranet and external Internet systems. Constructs applications utilizing Internet and Windows development tools, developing web page infrastructure and applications with advanced graphics and features while ensuring optimal web server and site performance.
  • Establishes, evaluates, and communicates website usage and security policies and standards, offering technical assistance to site administrators. May assist in planning overall company strategies related to Internet usage and may make recommendations regarding hardware and software purchases for web development.
  • May develop user profiles, focusing on application security with an emphasis on minimizing human error, display issues, visual interaction, physical manipulation, and task/objective analyses. May contribute to design concepts and implementations, providing insights on user design considerations. May produce specifications detailing user requirements and internal structures for products in development, while offering guidance on internal controls and industry best practices during application implementation.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION

A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent, along with a minimum of four years of relevant work experience in addition to at least 7 years of experience in the field. A Master's Degree or some graduate coursework is preferred.

WORK EXPERIENCE

7+ years of experience required. Must be proficient in code generation technologies, enterprise application integration, service-oriented architecture, ETL tools, and application infrastructure technologies.

SKILLS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Possesses extensive experience, applying professional concepts and organizational objectives to resolve complex issues creatively and effectively. Must have completed all levels of certification and be actively pursuing advanced knowledge of emerging technologies and developments in the field. Requires advanced knowledge of commercial Internet/web tools and protocols. Expected to transition from learning one technology/language/application to becoming proficient in all, including emerging technologies and design considerations. Formal software engineering and system engineering skills are essential, along with the ability to conduct business system analysis.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not involve supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. However, senior-level roles are expected to provide guidance, technical advice, training, and mentoring to junior employees, sharing knowledge to assist in their skill development.

WORK COMPLEXITY AND INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Work is complex and varied, often requiring the selection and application of technical guidelines. Independent judgment is necessary to identify and apply the most suitable methods and interpret precedents. The position frequently makes recommendations to management on significant departmental matters. Supervision typically involves direction on complex projects and new job duties and priorities.

Responsible for compiling and organizing data and figures.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Decisions are made with considerable freedom and discretion, including recommendations that may require approval on matters affecting multiple departments. The role is expected to propose new solutions to problems, improve existing methods, and generate innovative ideas. May also review decisions made by others on routine matters.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Decisions made in this role have a moderate impact on the department or division, influencing satisfaction levels, operational efficiencies, and financial outcomes. Errors may lead to significant consequences, often not subject to direct verification, resulting in potential financial losses.

COMMUNICATION AND INTERACTIONS

Engages in negotiations and influences outcomes by interpreting departmental strategies and services, resolving conflicts, and coordinating approvals below the executive level. Interactions typically involve customers, senior professional staff, and managers.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Leads the resolution of sensitive and confidential issues on behalf of the department, acting as a trusted advisor involved in customer decision-making processes. Monitors customer service standards and ensures high-quality service delivery.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a standard office environment, free from hazardous conditions. The role may involve repetitive motions and extended periods of sitting. Employees are expected to be goal-oriented and customer service-focused, with availability during emergencies and project-related work.
