Overview:

We are looking for a dedicated Financial Analyst to provide comprehensive accounting services at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This role is situated within the Cost/GL, Capital, Inventory, Benefits, and Tax Accounting Department, specifically in the General Ledger and Reporting Group of the Accounting Division.

As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with management and various personnel to tackle intricate accounting challenges by offering expert accounting guidance and strategic insights. This position demands a significant degree of independent judgment, decision-making, precision, creativity, and initiative while safeguarding sensitive financial information.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute monthly financial statement reporting tasks in compliance with the DOE Standard Accounting and Reporting System (STARS).
  • Conduct reconciliations between STARS and General Ledger data.
  • Analyze financial data and create entries for the General Ledger and STARS.
  • Prepare and analyze components of the 3rd and 4th quarter DOE reporting package, including financial statement footnote disclosures.
  • Engage with DOE, Inspector General, and both internal and external audit teams involved in financial statement audits and information requests.
  • Prepare reconciliations for General Ledger accounts.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of SAP master data.
  • Adhere to strict deadlines for weekly, monthly, fiscal, and calendar year submissions and reporting.
  • Become proficient with the ORNL ERP system and other supporting databases to effectively perform required tasks.
  • Develop a strong understanding of accounting and financial reporting standards, as well as government regulations.
  • Support Business Operations staff in analyzing and processing costing and other accounting activities.
  • Identify and analyze potential accounting risks and issues.
  • Correct inconsistent data, resolve problems, and devise new analytical methods.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Uphold a strong commitment to ethical values and principles.

  • Provide assistance and participate in special projects within the General Ledger and Reporting group, including maintaining General Ledger accounts and Trial Balance master data, processing month-end and year-end closing functions, and supporting various accounting processes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant accounting or finance experience.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and shifting priorities.
  • Self-motivated individual capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and well-developed communication skills, with the ability to analyze and present accounting information effectively.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks to meet conflicting deadlines.
  • Proficiency in applying accounting principles and knowledge of GAAP and federal accounting standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Adobe Acrobat.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in public accounting with a focus on financial reporting and audits.
  • Master's degree in accounting or finance with extensive training and experience.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or candidate.
  • Familiarity with UT-Battelle, LLC and DOE accounting systems is advantageous.
  • Experience in cost accounting.
  • Knowledge of SAP systems.
