Position Details:
The General Surgery & Trauma Stepdown Unit at Duke is seeking to recruit a new graduate or experienced Registered Nurse who is committed to our mission of Advancing Health Together.

Work Schedule:
Options include:
- 3 twelve-hour night shifts (7 PM - 7 AM)
- 3 twelve-hour day shifts (7 AM - 7 PM)
- 3 twelve-hour rotating shifts (50% days; 50% nights)
Note: Shift assignments are subject to completion of a day shift orientation and a successful probationary period.

Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a degree from an accredited nursing program (Bachelor's, Associate's, or Nursing Diploma).
For Experienced Nurses:
At least one year of clinical nursing experience is required. All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing must enroll in a BSN program within two years of hire and complete it within five years.

Licensure and Certification:
Current registration with the North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse or current compact RN licensure for North Carolina is mandatory. BLS certification (or higher) is also required.
For Experienced Nurses:
Professional specialty certification is preferred.

Unit Profile:
The General Surgery & Vascular Trauma Stepdown Unit at Duke is committed to delivering outstanding care to critically ill patients. Our 32-bed unit primarily serves patients recovering from abdominal and vascular surgeries, as well as trauma cases. We emphasize critical thinking in a dynamic environment that fosters teamwork and learning.

Key Skills Developed:
As a member of our team, you will gain expertise in:
- Tracheostomy care and maintenance
- Blood product administration
- Wound care and management
- Ostomy care and patient education
- Management of chest tubes and various drains
- Maintenance of orthopedic devices
- Post-operative monitoring and care
- Pain management techniques
- Foley catheter and nasogastric tube management
- IV maintenance and medication administration
- Laboratory specimen collection
- Cardiac telemetry monitoring
- Nutritional administration
- Coordination of patient and family education.
