Position Overview:
The Radiation Therapist is responsible for delivering patient care in a therapeutic environment, overseeing the simulation, treatment planning, and administration of prescribed radiation therapy. This role includes direct accountability for the patient's well-being before, during, and after daily treatments.
Key Responsibilities:
Essential Duties:
- Administers a structured course of radiation therapy treatment as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.
- Delivers radiation therapy treatments with precision and safety, utilizing various therapeutic equipment while monitoring and documenting patient responses.
- Maintains accurate treatment records and details of procedures performed.
- Observes patients during treatment, exercising discretion in withholding treatment when necessary, and consulting with the radiation oncologist as needed.
- Educates patients and their families about radiation therapy processes, assessing their understanding.
- Plans treatment by identifying tumors and target volumes as directed by the radiation oncologist.
- Conducts treatment planning, including dose calculations and fabrication of immobilization devices.
- Evaluates patients' physiological and psychological responses to treatment, providing support and referrals to appropriate resources.
- Ensures radiation safety through regular quality assurance checks and adherence to safety protocols.
- Identifies equipment malfunctions and takes necessary corrective actions.
- Prepares and assists with brachytherapy procedures as required.
- Takes responsibility for maintaining the assigned area, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
- Participates in data collection and serves on committees for quality assurance and improvement initiatives in Radiation Oncology.
- Exemplifies the hospital's core values and customer service standards in all interactions.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of equipment, treatment methods, and patient care protocols.
- Provides education and training for students and assists in their evaluation.
- Adheres to departmental policies regarding safety and reporting protocols.
- Contributes to performance improvement initiatives across various operational areas.
- Practices financial responsibility through efficient resource utilization.
- Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of patient care and information handling.
Additional Responsibilities:
1. May supervise the department in the absence of the Network Administrator.
2. Assists with nursing duties, including patient education and support during examinations.
3. Provides secretarial support, including scheduling and administrative tasks.
4. Aids in the transportation of patients when necessary.
5. Accesses hospital systems for patient information and documentation.
6. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
Frequent use of hands for operating equipment and handling charts. Ability to walk for extended periods, lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs, and assist in moving patients weighing up to 300 lbs with support. Regular bending, stooping, and reaching required. Good hearing and vision are essential for effective communication and patient care.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
ARRT certification or eligibility is required (must pass registry within one year of hire). Current CPR certification is mandatory.
Training and Experience:
Proficiency in computer skills is necessary. Ongoing training in departmental procedures will be provided.
Work Schedule:
Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, with additional hours as needed based on departmental requirements.
