We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Science Teacher to join our team at Flex High School Pontiac. As a Science Teacher, you will play a vital role in shaping the educational experience of our students and contributing to their academic success.

Job Summary

The Science Teacher will be responsible for teaching science courses to high school students in a personalized instructional environment. You will work closely with students and parents to determine and evaluate student academic plans, collaborate with other school faculty to ensure student retention and academic success, and participate in state and school mandated testing.

Responsibilities
  • Teach science courses using approved curriculum and assign individualized courses of study to students
  • Administer assessments to newly enrolled students in language, mathematics, and reading within the first month of enrollment
  • Monitor and administer testing to students upon completion of English and mathematics courses
  • Participate in state and school mandated testing
  • Accept, review, and evaluate homework
  • Monitor student credit completion
  • Administer, proctor, grade tests, and provide test scores
  • Refer students to core subject teachers when necessary
  • Monitor and document student notes in the Student Information System
  • Claim student attendance and reporting in the SIS database
  • Conduct close-out procedures of student folders at the end of the learning period and when a student drops, withdraws, or graduates
  • Work with Student Relations staff on student folder changes and corrections
  • Accurate record-keeping as defined by the Michigan Department of Education and independent auditors
  • Be available to students and/or parents during student appointments
  • Call students when they miss appointments
  • Assist students in finding additional resources when necessary
  • Refer students to labs, tutoring, student study teams, and counseling when appropriate
  • Discipline students when necessary
  • Keep student work neat and organized
  • Responsible for meeting Michigan Professional Teaching Standards
  • Complete yearly academic plans that correspond to upcoming state standards
  • Complete report cards after each semester and when a student drops, withdraws, or graduates
  • Participate in developing new and creative curriculum that serves the educational needs of students and the school, as assigned by the school leader
  • Attend all staff meetings and assigned professional development activities
  • Attend graduation ceremonies and participate in other school events
  • Adhere to attendance policies
  • Perform administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned, which may be changed or modified from time to time
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Michigan Teaching Standards and understanding of the organization's culture, business units, services, and products
  • Knowledge of educational trends, research, and technology to support learning
  • Knowledge of research-based instructional strategies necessary for effective instruction of all student populations, including students at-risk of academic failure
  • Knowledge in a variety of educational programs
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student learning needs
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, staff members, and community representatives in providing a rigorous educational program
  • Ability to work effectively with all racial, ethnic, linguistic, disability, and socioeconomic groups
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including giving clear and concise instructions, using academic language, and appropriate level of delivery, and listening without bias and providing appropriate feedback/reinforcement
  • Ability to make independent judgments, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records
  • Planning and organizational skills
  • Self-sufficient, strong interpersonal skills, and focused on excellent customer service
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Teaching License issued by the Michigan Department of Education
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience with student and educational information systems
  • Skilled in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
  • Ability to travel in performance of job duties is required
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull objects weighing up to 10 pounds (almost all office jobs)

  • Finger Dexterity: Using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together
  • Talking: Especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Average Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information
  • Average Visual Abilities: Ordinary acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or operate machinery
