Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. As a key member of our Transduction Device and Array Development Department, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, and testing underwater acoustic transduction systems. Your expertise in mechanical, electrical, acoustic, and material science concepts will enable you to develop innovative sonar transducer and array designs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and design sonar transducers and arrays
  • Design and analyze mechanical packaging concepts
  • Analyze electrical circuits
  • Design fabrication tooling and test beds
  • Create and apply assembly procedures
  • Provide technical leadership and supervision of staff conducting transducer fabrication and testing
  • Develop and present technical and project status reports
  • Perform project management (schedule and budget development)
  • Collaborate with team members and nurture relationships with customers and vendors

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant engineering or science field
  • Experience in mechanical or electrical design, technical problem-solving, and technical writing
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Excel, PowerPoint, and CAD
  • Preferred skills include finite element analysis, experimental test conduct, acoustics, and project management
