Position Overview: The Certified Recovery Support Specialist is an individual who has personally navigated the challenges of mental health and substance use, is in a state of recovery, has undergone formal training in the peer support model, and has successfully completed the certification requirements in the State of Wisconsin. Recovery Support Specialists engage in one-on-one interactions with individuals enrolled in the Forensic and Conditional Release Program, assisting them in identifying their needs throughout their recovery journeys.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate connections for individuals in the Conditional Release program to a range of self-directed supports and services, including traditional mental health services such as case management, psychiatric care, individual therapy, mutual aid support groups, and other healing activities that contribute to the recovery process.
- Conduct a mix of in-person and virtual meetings to provide support.
- Deliver personalized peer support services to individuals in the Conditional Release program within their communities, including home visits and other community-based settings.
- Assist individuals in exploring their goals and priorities while participating in the peer support initiative.
- Provide a strength-based assessment of an individual's capabilities, strengths, and resources from a recovery perspective.
- Empower individuals to take ownership of their lived experiences and foster their voice and choice in service participation to enhance their recovery journey.
- Aid individuals in navigating the systems of care and encourage communication with other service providers and Conditional Release Case Managers to promote self-determination and dignity in care.
- Ensure accurate documentation and maintenance of case files in accordance with agency policies, government regulations, and applicable local, state, and federal codes. This includes completing initial and ongoing Needs Assessments and progress notes for each interaction.
- Collaborate with assigned Case Managers on a bi-weekly basis to share updates on progress towards recovery goals.
- Work with participants' collateral contacts and community resources to ensure continuity of care, with written consent to support their recovery journey.
- Support participants in their stabilization and recovery processes.
- Attend and engage in staff meetings and weekly supervision as required.
- Participate in in-service training and conferences as necessary.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform other job-related duties as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficient computer skills; ability to maintain accurate documentation; capacity to meet deadlines; understanding of substance use issues and mental health needs within the Forensic and Conditional Release Program.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED/HSED.
- Completion of state Certified Peer Specialist training.
- Current Certified Peer Specialist certification.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Personal experience with mental health and substance use challenges and knowledge of recovery principles.
- Compliance with all requirements for criminal and caregiver background checks, driver's record, and reference checks.
- Valid driver's license, access to a vehicle, and sufficient insurance to meet agency standards is preferred.
Work Environment: The role involves community-based work, requiring flexibility in scheduling, which may include evenings and weekends to accommodate the needs of participants.
Physical Requirements: The position is mobile, involving travel within the community, including home visits and other locations; must be able to navigate stairs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
