About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Autonomous Maritime Systems Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. As a key member of our Ocean Systems and Engineering Group, you will play a leading role in the development and testing of our nation's next generation of maritime systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop comprehensive test and evaluation programs for autonomous maritime systems
  • Lead the integration and testing of autonomous maritime systems to ensure compatibility and performance across various platforms and environments
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to analyze test data and identify trends, issues, and areas for improvement
  • Perform technical and project leadership for small- to medium-sized technical tasks involving hardware and software in-the-field testing
  • Ensure all test activities align with relevant standards, regulations, and best practices
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, documentation, and presentations on test results, methodologies, and project status
  • Collaborate with multiple DoD system partners to evaluate current strategies, risks, and opportunities, developing and implementing test strategies to refine and improve their programs and missions
Requirements
  • BS in a technical or scientific field such as Systems Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or Ocean Engineering
  • 7+ years of senior engineering experience working with maritime systems, autonomous vehicles, or a related field
  • Proven ability to lead projects, including planning, execution, and delivery within scope
  • Familiarity with on-water testing of maritime systems, including test setup and execution
  • Familiarity with model and simulation tools and techniques
  • Passion for system engineering methods and tools for maritime system development, integration, evaluation, and technology analysis
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with a track record of success in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work within the government infrastructure and take on leadership roles in a diverse environment of contractor and government teams
  • Ability to support travel (up to 20%) required to attend meetings and testing
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by start date and ultimately obtain a final Secret level clearance
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in a technical or scientific field such as Systems Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or Ocean Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience leading engineering teams to test and evaluate maritime systems
  • 10+ years of experience working with government teams to field maritime systems
  • Experience with fielded autonomous systems
  • Active Top Secret security clearance
