About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Electrical Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As an Electrical Engineer - Maritime Systems, you will play a critical role in the design, development, and testing of advanced sensor systems and complex electro-mechanical systems for maritime and undersea applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze, and test prototype sensor systems and testbeds destined for a maritime environment.
  • Apply innovative thinking to complex problems, assist in the brainstorming and development of new initiatives/concepts in maritime applications through research and development (R&D) efforts.
  • Develop custom sensor interfaces along with their associated signal condition, filtering, and data acquisition systems using A/D and D/A converters.
  • Support lab development and testing of electrical sensors, power control hardware, and distribution systems, as well as imaging systems using equipment such as oscilloscopes/digitizers, function generators, light sources, optical detectors, spectrum analyzers, and other test equipment.
  • Develop project plans and test plans and conduct land/ocean-based field tests/demonstrations of advanced sensor systems to ensure that program objectives are satisfactorily addressed through simulation, subsystem integration testing, and full system testing.
  • Collaborate with multiple DoD system partners to evaluate current designs, identify risks, and develop solutions to address those risks.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related technical field with 2+ years of demonstrated experience with relevant electrical systems in a professional environment.
  • Hands-on experience with prototype development, circuit design, debugging, PCB design, interfacing analog electronics to FPGAs and microcontrollers with serial protocols such as I2C/SPI/USB, system integration & test, developing data acquisition systems, power distribution systems, and similar tasks.
  • Detailed knowledge of how to use lab instruments and engineering software tools such as Altium, PSpice, LabView for electrical design and development.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and possess strong interpersonal, speaking, and technical writing skills to communicate effectively with staff and management at all levels.
  • Ability to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering or closely related technical field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with moored and towed ocean systems like buoys, towed arrays, UUV, and ROVs.
  • Experience with development and testing of towed or moored acoustic and non-acoustic sensor arrays or similar telemetry systems.
  • Experience with Ship Board Power systems, Power Filtering, or Large Battery Powered Systems.
  • Experience with Preamplifier design, Switching power supplies vs Linear Power Regulators, AC and DC power supplies, Low-Noise Power Systems, and Testing any/all of these systems.
