Internship Availability:
This internship is designed for individuals pursuing a bachelor's degree in a field related to social work or seeking the Recovery Support Specialist certification.

Internship Role:
The Recovery Support Specialist Intern embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, adhering to our Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program while complying with all relevant policies and standards.

The intern will leverage personal experiences and training to establish a secure environment for individuals to process crisis situations, learn wellness strategies, and mitigate future crises. As part of a multidisciplinary team, the intern will embrace the Crisis Now concept, focusing on recovery-oriented practices, trauma-informed care, and viewing crises as learning opportunities. The intern will provide peer support in a non-judgmental and empathetic manner, ensuring that all services are delivered in a welcoming and home-like atmosphere aimed at preventing crises and reducing psychiatric hospitalizations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recognize the voluntary nature of recovery support for guests.
  • Act within ethical standards while maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • Utilize personal recovery experiences to offer peer support.
  • Serve as a role model by demonstrating effective coping techniques and self-care strategies.
  • Assist guests in identifying strengths, recovery goals, and barriers, and in determining interventions based on their personal life goals.
  • Inform guests about community resources and how to utilize them in their recovery journey.
  • Provide on-site support and introductions to services within the healthcare system.
  • Build collaborative relationships with local emergency services and organizations to enhance awareness of available support services.
  • Advocate for person-centered recovery support services within various systems.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to review cases and develop individualized plans.
  • Facilitate recovery-oriented group sessions.
  • Act as an advocate for guests within the community and during consultations with other staff.
  • Provide recovery-related information and resources to all guests, ensuring adherence to trauma-informed care principles.
  • Support guests in identifying their needs, strengths, and resources.
  • Assist with transportation for guests to appointments.
  • Contribute to treatment and discharge planning.
  • Consult with other service agencies regarding case-specific issues.
  • Document services provided in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all documentation requirements.
  • Report any suspicions of abuse or neglect immediately.
  • Participate in relevant training and recovery empowerment initiatives.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to articulate personal recovery experiences relevant to providing peer support.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health-related field.
  • Experience working with individuals facing severe mental health or substance use challenges.
  • Familiarity with Medicaid regulations.
  • Knowledge of recovery planning methodologies.
  • Certification as a Recovery Support Specialist.
  • Experience facilitating wellness recovery action planning sessions.
