Overview Key Responsibilities

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

Oversee the daily operations of the laboratory for the designated section and/or shift.

Ensure adherence to all personnel policies and practices.

Collaborate in setting departmental goals and objectives.

Develop and implement policies and procedures in conjunction with relevant departments across the organization.

Conduct interviews, hire, and manage disciplinary actions for staff as necessary.

Prepare and conduct performance evaluations.

Manage work schedules to ensure sufficient staffing for workflow completion.

Authorize overtime as required.

Generate various reports for assigned committees and management as needed.

Assume administrative responsibilities for additional areas as directed by the site manager.

TECHNICAL OPERATIONS

Serve as a technical expert for laboratory instrumentation.

Assess new procedures and equipment for potential implementation.

Supervise the technical performance of the section to guarantee accurate results and optimal turnaround times.

Compile and report workload statistics to the site manager.

Report quality control, proficiency testing, and quality improvement issues to the site manager as necessary.

Ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) during testing.

Facilitate the review of results and address any associated issues.

Respond to inquiries outside of regular hours.

Ensure that technical manuals meet all regulatory requirements.

Perform testing duties as needed.

Cover any vacant shifts as required.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT

Assist the manager in preparing the budget, including salaries, supplies, and services.

Monitor and justify monthly budget variances.

Identify cost-saving opportunities within the section.

Recommend and justify capital expenditures, including new or replacement equipment.

Recognize and communicate potential revenue opportunities.

Conduct cost analyses for new or existing tests as appropriate.

INVENTORY CONTROL

Oversee the procurement of laboratory supplies.

Implement and maintain an inventory control system to minimize costs and enhance productivity.

Seek cost-effective purchasing methods for supplies.

Evaluate new equipment and product purchases as directed by the site manager.

COMMUNICATIONS

Participate in hospital-wide committees and staff meetings as scheduled.

Relay laboratory and site issues to the site manager.

Lead regularly scheduled staff meetings.

Foster shared values and governance throughout the organization.

Actively engage in incident reporting and communicate findings and solutions to the site manager.

Meet with vendors and technical representatives regarding operational needs.

Collaborate with other laboratory management personnel.

COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT

Assist in developing protocols to meet regulatory standards.

Collaborate with coordinators and management to ensure compliance.

Provide remediation as necessary.

Participate in required training sessions.

REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Monitor and update laboratory compliance with regulatory agencies.

Coordinate self-inspections and on-site inspections with the manager.

Ensure all quality assurance and quality control logs are maintained as required by regulatory agencies.

SAFETY STANDARDS

Ensure all staff comply with OSHA, fire, disaster, right-to-know, and infection control policies.

Maintain a safe working environment in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory standards.

Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to departmental safety procedures, including the safe handling of hazardous materials.

Complete mandatory annual training programs relevant to the section as defined by human resources.

Qualifications

Education and Training:

Must fulfill current CAP requirements for a laboratory supervisor.

Bachelor's degree in medical technology or a related scientific field with 5+ years of experience in high-complexity testing in a CLIA/CAP environment; ASCP certification or equivalent is required.

Experience/Skills Requirement

Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience.

Two (2) years of supervisory experience in a laboratory setting is required.

Proven experience in a clinical laboratory or healthcare environment, with a solid understanding of laboratory operations and regulatory compliance.

In-depth knowledge of clinical laboratory principles, methodologies, and devices.

Familiarity with relevant regulatory guidelines (e.g., CLIA, CAP) and accreditation processes.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot technical issues effectively.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with various stakeholders and deliver training programs.

Detail-oriented mindset with a commitment to accuracy and quality in laboratory practices.

Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Proficient in using laboratory information systems and data management tools.
