Under general supervision, the Chief Waterway Patrol Officer is responsible for operating large, dual-engine powered patrol vessels across various waterways and lakes. This role involves managing auxiliary equipment and providing maintenance recommendations for the vessels. The officer will engage in tasks related to environmental oversight and pollution management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate large, dual-engine powered vessels, helm units, marine engines, and auxiliary marine apparatus.
- Ensure safe operational conditions of the vessel.
- Oversee personnel during routine maintenance and housekeeping activities.
- Navigate the vessel in both open waters and confined areas, deploy specialized equipment, and maintain operational and maintenance records.
- Coordinate with relevant authorities regarding pollution management and marine operations.
- Provide training to crew members on safe vessel operation.
Additional Duties Include:
- Utilizing water sampling instruments.
- Supervising the repair, overhaul, and upkeep of hulls, engines, and auxiliary equipment.
- Executing other assigned responsibilities as needed.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Comprehensive understanding of U.S. Coast Guard piloting regulations and navigational protocols.
- Familiarity with large dual-engine powered vessels and marine equipment.
- Knowledge of environmental sampling techniques.
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent, along with four years of experience in operating government or commercial vessels on waterways, specifically large, dual-engine boats.
Substitution:
Additional experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements. A U.S. Coast Guard Operator License - Master Credential (25 to 100 Gross Tons) may substitute for experience.
Environmental Conditions:
This position may involve exposure to various mechanical equipment, diverse weather conditions, noise, odors, and traffic.
