Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director, Compound Development Team Leader-Oncology to lead our compound development team in the oncology therapeutic area. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for developing and executing the compound strategy, championing the product/brand at all levels of J&J, and managing the alignment on communication on all CDT matters.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to compound strategy decision-making by ensuring relevant research, analysis, and expertise are available.
  • Lead the compound development team in partnership with line functions to successfully develop the compound, maximizing its value over its lifecycle while minimizing costs and time.
  • Build team effectiveness and lead the compound development team to achieve its goals through the networks of people/functions represented on the team.
  • Champion the product/brand at all levels of J&J and manage the alignment on communication on all CDT matters.
  • Develop and maintain the compound development strategy in collaboration with the Project Manager.
  • Identify potential issues and lead contingency planning; lead the compound development team in problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Lead the resolution of conflict at the compound development team, oncology senior leadership team, development committee, investment committee, group operating committee, and joint steering committees for partnered compounds and senior management levels.
  • Ensure successful implementation of clinical supplies strategy.
  • Accountable for overall budget and project plan deliverables.
  • Act as co-chair of global project teams with alliance partners and align global strategy within a partnership, as applicable.
  • Collaborate with internal alliance managers for partnered compounds and ensure lessons learned at critical nodes in the development path.
  • Lead the communication of strategy, issues, and plans to the project management committee, oncology senior leadership team, development committee, investment committee, group operating committee, alliance partners, JPKK, regional management boards, and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent the interests of the compound/brand along with the global commercial lead at the oncology senior leadership team.
  • Build and maintain team effectiveness and satisfaction.
  • Drive innovation by benchmarking.
Requirements
  • Candidate preferred to hold a PhD, MD, or M.D./Ph.D. with a minimum of 5-8 years of experience in a leadership role as part of a research-driven pharmaceutical company.
  • Experience in leading clinical development programs in the appropriate therapeutic area is preferred.
  • Qualified candidates will have demonstrated a solid understanding of and involvement in the entire drug development process.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally with interdisciplinary teams to access and optimize resources for development programs and experience working in a matrix organization.
  • Business-oriented, having managed resources and budgets with a proven record of leading projects through successful transition from discovery to early development and advancement of projects through preclinical and clinical development to commercialization within the therapeutic area.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills are a must, and a strong track record of producing results in a matrix-based environment is essential.
  • Domestic and international travel may be required of approximately 10-25% (depending on the compound type and stage of development).
  • This is a role that should be filled by a high-performing individual in the organization who demonstrates outstanding leadership, influence, and communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for developing creative solutions and meeting project objectives are required.
  • Strong project planning and tracking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability for strategic thinking and contingency planning.
  • Expert knowledge of the drug development process and familiarity with pharmaceutical portfolio risk management is required.
  • Must understand requirements for successful commercialization of a new product.
  • Expert interpersonal skills for bridging between scientific and business participants, for negotiating timelines, resources, and for effective international collaborations.
  • Expert oral/written communication skills, allowing effective interactions with all levels of the organization.
  • Expert critical and objective interpretation of scientific and commercial information.
  • Expert analytical skills for integrating and interpreting interdisciplinary project information.
  • High degree of organizational awareness and understanding of change management.
What We Offer

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $157,000 to $271,400.
