Job Summary

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology seeks a highly skilled Industrial Hygiene Specialist to join its Environmental Health and Safety Office. This role is critical in supporting the Institute's academic and business objectives while ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and best practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct risk and exposure assessments, including air and wipe sampling, to identify potential hazards and recommend controls to eliminate or reduce exposures.
  • Conduct indoor air quality investigations to identify and mitigate potential health risks.
  • Develop, revise, and deliver training sessions to educate staff on industrial hygiene practices and procedures.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for campus emergencies to provide timely support and response.
  • Manage assigned programs, such as the Methylene Chloride Program, to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
  • Assist with the shipping of hazardous chemicals and batteries to ensure safe handling and disposal.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environment, health and safety, or a related discipline (e.g., engineering, physical or biological sciences, chemistry).
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience in industrial hygiene or a related field.
  • Proven technical skills and ability to perform hazard assessments.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, EPA, IATA, DOT, and fire department regulations.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Basic computer and database skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in environment, health and safety, or a related discipline.
  • Certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Evidence of leadership and ability to implement integrated EHS programs.
  • Ability to influence and inspire staff, colleagues, and managers.
