Santa Clara, California, United States Palo Alto Networks Full time
Your Career

We are seeking a Senior Security Research Engineer for the Cortex Xpanse's Security Research Engineering division. In this role, you will be tasked with the development, validation, and implementation of vulnerability signatures and protocol payloads utilized by our scanning infrastructure to identify vulnerabilities present within customer networks. Additionally, you will create new policies that encode risky device configurations as executable code based on observations derived from our extensive global scanning data. As a vital member of our team, you will proactively identify vulnerabilities and misconfigurations from newly discovered CVEs while addressing requests from Xpanse customers.

Your Impact

  • Play a crucial role in Xpanse's vulnerability response by developing necessary signatures and payloads to detect critical CVEs, while maintaining effective communication with the Xpanse team, the Cortex business unit, and Palo Alto Networks.
  • Investigate emerging threats and create proof of concepts to identify confirmed and inferred vulnerabilities.
  • Research and formulate fingerprints that assist Xpanse in recognizing and categorizing various types of services operating on the global Internet.
  • Proactively incorporate customer-requested policies and execute protocol payloads while minimizing false positives and negatives.
  • Explore new vulnerability threats on the global Internet and contribute to Cortex Research publications and blogs.

Your Experience:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent professional or military experience). We do not emphasize a specific number of years of experience; however, individuals who excel in Staff-level roles are typically early to mid-career professionals.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of network security vulnerabilities, CVSS scoring, and exploitation techniques.
  • Familiarity with one or more programming languages such as Java, Python, Go, or Bash.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Capability to work independently as a researcher as well as collaboratively within larger cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with SQL and Regex.
  • Prior experience conducting open-ended security research and showcasing findings through blogs and publications.
  • Hands-on experience in security research, systems security, or network security.

The Team

Cortex Xpanse is dedicated to safeguarding some of the world's most significant organizations by identifying online risks that others may overlook. Our security research teams are central to our products, responsible for developing security detections that enable customers to transform vast amounts of Internet data into essential cybersecurity insights. We continuously innovate, challenging conventional approaches to cybersecurity. Our engineers are not afraid to create solutions for problems that have yet to be addressed.

Our Commitment

We are pioneers who aspire to achieve great things, take calculated risks, and challenge the existing norms of cybersecurity. Our mission cannot be fulfilled without diverse teams collaborating and innovating together.
