Electrical Systems Assistant

This is a non-supervisory position that assists line workers and journeymen in the Electric department. The incumbent will have high contact with customers and the general public, requiring exceptional customer service skills. The position will be assigned duties appropriate for the level of training and knowledge, including truck preparation, ground maintenance, and providing tools and materials to crews.
Key Responsibilities- Supports other line workers in their duties.
- Cleans and loads utility trucks with necessary equipment and materials.
- Performs work in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring the safety of self, crew members, and the public.
- Participates in job site briefings, discussing job plans, personal protective equipment, and risk mitigation.
- Communicates effectively with customers, the public, and City staff.
- Stocks utility trucks with materials, poles, and transformers.
- Assembles electric apparatus and sends materials up poles using hand lines.
- Pulls up wire on hand lines and digs and fills in holes.
- Cuts and hauls brush, and may be assigned to assist other City departments on a temporary basis.
- Uses good judgment to avoid damage and prevent accidents and incidents.
- Assists with maintaining vehicles and equipment in proper working condition, including checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic systems.
- Lifts, pushes, and pulls heavy objects or materials.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Texas Class A Driver's license or ability to obtain within six months.
- Ability to learn general electrical system principles, practices, procedures, and safety codes.
- Ability to learn basic electrical design and standard office practices and procedures.
- Ability to learn electrical theory, policies, and procedures, as well as equipment and tools used in building, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems.
- Ability to read and write, and accurately interpret and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to remain safety conscious and communicate effectively with co-workers and the public.
- Ability to climb poles and ladders and safely work from heights.
- Ability to safely operate equipment and hand tools.
This position primarily works in an outdoor environment, with duties requiring exposure to all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, snow, ice, rain, and wind. The incumbent may be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and other scheduled hours during emergencies.
