Head Librarian, William Andrews Clark Memorial Library

The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head Librarian to lead the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing priorities, policies, and workflows for all library operations, including collection development and management, cataloging and archival processing, preservation and conservation, research services, digitization, instruction, and outreach.
Key Responsibilities- Supervise a team of librarians and library assistants, providing guidance and direction to ensure the effective management of library services.
- Develop and implement strategies for collection development, including selecting books, manuscripts, and other items for purchase and considering offers of in-kind gifts.
- Work collaboratively with the Director and other colleagues to plan activities and programs based around the Clark's collections, and in budgetary planning, and fundraising and development efforts.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the physical plant, including monitoring security procedures and policies to safeguard staff, collections, historic buildings, and grounds.
- Develop and maintain relationships with faculty, students, and other researchers and users to promote the library's services and collections.
- Stay up-to-date with digital standards and new and emerging digital technologies and services as they relate to libraries.
- Participate in various standing committees operated by the Center, the UCLA Library, and the Librarians Association of University of California, Los Angeles (LAUC-LA).
- Represent the Clark at various local, national, and international conferences, meetings, and professional organizations.
- ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Science required at the time of hire; OR Master's degree (or other advanced degree) in Information Sciences or related field at the time of hire and work experience in a library setting.
- Five years of progressively responsible administrative experience in research libraries or special collections departments, including management of resources and personnel.
- Experience and demonstrated skill in supervision, including hiring, orienting, training and development, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, and taking disciplinary action as necessary.
- Knowledge of rare books, manuscripts, and the antiquarian book trade.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both as a team member and independently and to promote teamwork among colleagues.
- Demonstrated understanding of the scholarly use of library collections and services and of current developments in archives and special collections librarianship.
- Experience with providing reference and instructional services as well as outreach/community engagement within a special collections setting.
- Demonstrated ability to remain apprised of digital standards and new and emerging digital technologies and services as these relate to libraries.
- Knowledge of intellectual property issues related to archives, libraries, and special collections.
- Evidence of a strong service orientation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to work effectively with culturally diverse library users and colleagues.
- Demonstrated involvement in fundraising, including government and foundation grants and/or individual and corporate awards and in-kind gifts.
- Proven success in project management that includes planning, developing, and evaluating programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and other researchers and users.
- Experience with the evaluation and assessment of library resources.
- Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills.
- Capacity to thrive in the evolving environment of a world-class research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
- Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication, etc.
- Reading knowledge of an additional language within the Clark Library's holdings (French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish)
Applicants with all the above basic qualifications and any of the following preferred qualifications or professional experiences are strongly encouraged to apply: 1) An earned doctorate in a relevant discipline; 2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the graduate level; 3) Demonstrated experience with implementing new technologies in a special collections environment; 4) Demonstrated expertise in scholarly writing and research; 5) Reading knowledge of at least two additional European languages, preferably French, German, Italian, Spanish or Latin.
