Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Children's Services Librarian to join our team at the City of National City, CA. As a key member of our library staff, you will be responsible for planning, administering, and supervising Children's Services, as well as performing professional library work in the specialized function of children's programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, direct, and supervise the Children's Services department.
  • Provide reference services to patrons.
  • Develop and implement on and off-site programs and special projects for children.
  • Assist patrons in selecting and locating library materials.
  • Review and select new materials for the children's collection.
  • Catalog, classify, and assign Dewey decimal numbers to library materials.
  • Evaluate, discard, and update library materials.
  • Recommend materials for school classes, research, and leisure usage.
  • Conduct tours and instructional classes for children.
  • Train, assign, and review the work of volunteers and subordinate personnel.
  • Stay up-to-date with new technologies and adapt them for improved library services.
  • Seek, write, and administer grant programs and other special projects.
  • Promote and publicize library services, programming, and resources through outreach efforts.
  • Collaborate with community agencies serving youth.
  • Gain a broad understanding of the library's purpose and function within the community.
  • Makes suggestions and implements programs for improving library service and utilization of facilities.
  • Propose budget needs and administer budget for the section.
  • Represent the department at regional and multi-agency committees and in-house professional meetings as assigned.
Requirements
  • Completion of a standard course in an accredited library school and two (2) years of professional experience in a library; OR
  • Master's degree in library science and one (1) year of professional experience.
  • Experience working as a Children's or Youth Librarian is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Principles and practices of professional library work.
  • Use of standard library tools and practices in processing library materials.
  • Principles of supervision and training.
  • Principles and practices of effective public relations.
Ability to
  • Perform technical library tasks.
  • Analyze professional and administrative problems and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Train and supervise the work of assigned staff.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with all levels of staff and the general public.
