Qualifications Required:

  • Master's Degree in Physics, Biophysics, Radiological Physics, or Health Physics.
  • Doctorate in Physics, Biophysics, Radiological Physics, or Health Physics is preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year of full-time training in therapeutic radiological physics.
  • Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in one of the following areas:
    • Therapeutic Radiological Physics
    • Roentgen-ray and Gamma-ray Physics
    • X-ray and Radium Physics
    • Radiological Physics
  • Certification by the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) in Radiation Oncology Physics or by the Canadian College of Medical Physics is required.
  • Registration with the Kansas Department of Health & Environment as a provider of radiation services in calibration and compliance surveys of external beam radiation therapy units is necessary prior to the start of employment.
  • If board eligible, completion of board certification within three years of employment is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage in the specification, selection, acceptance, and commissioning of radiation-producing equipment, accessories, and computerized treatment-planning systems.
  • Oversee the design, review, and implementation of a quality management program that incorporates the use of external-beam radiotherapy equipment. This program should detail the equipment utilized, measurement frequency, methodologies, suggested performance criteria, action levels, and notification processes.
  • Supervise the maintenance of equipment and collaborate with manufacturers to facilitate repairs. Evaluate all departmental equipment for ongoing utility, appropriateness, reliable performance, and condition, providing recommendations regarding practical lifespan, obsolescence, and replacement. Ensure instrument calibration is maintained.
  • Review patient records, including initial treatment plans, ongoing treatment reviews, and end-of-treatment evaluations for accuracy and completeness.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations as well as accepted technical standards related to radiation oncology and general radiation safety. Conduct competency assessments for annual checks and quality assurance for SBRT/SRT.
  • Provide an annual written summary of physics activities and quality program evaluations to the medical director and administration.
  • Adhere to all policies, standards, mandatory training, and requirements of Stormont Vail Health.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
