Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Adult Protection Supervisor to join our team at the County of Alameda. As a key member of our Adult Protective Services team, you will be responsible for supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of a unit responsible for investigations, assessments, case and client management, and estate administration and associated support work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and review the work of a unit responsible for investigations, assessments, case and client management, and estate administration and associated support work.
  • Develop and implement improvement plans when performance does not meet requirements, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Exercise sound judgment and maintain focus while coaching employees who are making diagnostic risk assessments and decisions regarding abuse or neglect intervention and remediation.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Interpret, apply and explain federal, state, local laws and Departmental policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Analyze and interpret information and make sound decisions.
  • Lead effectively.
  • Represent the County with other governmental agencies, organizations and the public effectively.
Requirements
  • Possession of a Master's degree in Social Work, Clinical Psychology, Counseling, Gerontology, Business or Public Administration, or a closely related field, from an accredited college or university.
  • Either I: The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time experience as an Adult Protective Services Worker II, Deputy Public Guardian-Conservator/Investigator, or higher-level social worker classification in the Alameda County classified service.
  • Or II: The equivalent of two (2) years of full-time experience providing social casework services to the mentally ill or elderly in a public or private social services organization or mental health organization, equivalent in level of responsibility to that of the Adult Protective Services Worker II in the Alameda County classified service.
  • Or III: Two years of full-time experience in the management of financial assets for estates or individuals, or the management of investments.
  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Broad knowledge related to the laws and principles of Adult Protective Services, with an understanding and/or willingness to gain understanding of the principles and practices of public administration, program planning, and development.
  • Professional knowledge and understanding regarding the normal aging process, the impact of age-related illnesses, mental illness, and developmental disabilities on the ability to independently manage daily activities, and the psycho-social dynamics of self-neglect or neglect or abuse by a third party.
  • Understanding of the role of the Social Services Agency, including its policies, procedures, program, and services.
  • Outstanding communication and listening skills that clearly articulate information verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals with varying ideas and job functions; ability to demonstrate interpersonal sensitivity.
  • Ability to effectively direct and monitor employee performance, develop and implement improvement plans when performance does not meet requirements, and take corrective action as needed.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain focus while coaching employees who are making diagnostic risk assessments and decisions regarding abuse or neglect intervention and remediation.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to effectively handle changing priorities.
  • Proficient computer skills, including competence in the use of AACTS or Panoramic.
