Key Responsibilities
  • Provide basic direct patient care as delegated by clinical professional personnel, in accordance with delegation law and rules, and current education.
  • Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe environment for patients and visitors.
  • Engage in population-appropriate communication and have knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
  • Give clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment and involve family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
  • Identify any physical limitations of the patient and deploy intervention when necessary.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
  • Interpret population-related data and plan care appropriately.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to different needs resulting from unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
  • Perform treatments, administer medication, or operate equipment safely.
  • Recognize and respond to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provide all patient care in a manner that is culturally-based and age-specific.
  • Measure vital signs, record observations of skin integrity, intake & output, height & weight (bedside or w/c scale), and report all changes including mental status.
  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADL's), skin care, tube and catheter care, turning, positioning, transfer, and ambulating, range of motion (ROM), hot and cold compresses.
  • Provide hygiene and comfort measures, including bathing/showering, pericare, and changing linens as needed.
  • Empties drainage bags and records outputs, disposes of bodily fluids/waste.
  • Utilize patient care equipment, such as manual/hydraulic/electronic lift/hoyer lift/bed scale.
  • Remove and reapply splints, braces, cervical collars, skin and skeletal traction, anti-embolic stockings, and perform post-mortem care.
  • Distribute and remove food trays, set up meal trays, position and prepare patient for meals, assist and/or feed patient, assist with menu selection, record calorie counts, provide snacks and fluids, and monitor head of bed (HOB) with patients receiving tube feedings.
  • Monitor patients who are a risk to themselves or others.
  • Assist with turning, coughing, and deep breathing, provide follow-up to incentive spirometry, reapply O2 cannula/mask, and provide portable oxygen tank for transport.
  • May perform EKG's, mobile care phlebotomy (MCP), and blood glucose.
Communication and Teamwork
  • Communicate patient observations to RN timely and appropriately.
  • Orient patients and visitors to room and unit and update the white boards appropriately.
  • Record measurements and patient data.
  • Document treatments and procedures performed.
  • Respond to and utilize nurse call system.
  • Reception and phone duties, as directed.
  • Retrieve information from the computer.
Environment and Safety
  • Facilitate the maintenance of a clean, safe, and organized environment for patients and coworkers.
  • Remove equipment when no longer in use to appropriate area for cleaning.
  • Re-order and stock materials as necessary.
  • Report maintenance issues.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • 1 year of college completed, with GPA of 2.5 or higher, prefer a clinic field of study.
  • Trained and maintains proficiency in AHA CPR and patient care skills.
  • Completes unit-specific hospital safety education.
