Patient Care Support Specialist

The Patient Care Support Specialist plays a vital role in delivering both direct and indirect assistance to patients undergoing surgical procedures in the preoperative and postoperative settings. Under the guidance of the Clinical Leader, Charge Nurse, or Nursing Director, the specialist performs various clinical tasks that enhance each patient's preparedness for surgery. This role encompasses a wide array of care services, including but not limited to EKGs, phlebotomy, blood glucose monitoring, and supporting surgical procedures within their professional scope. Additionally, the specialist is trained to respond to medical emergencies using Heartsaver CPR and AED skills, facilitate patient transport, and manage equipment and supplies effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identifies and addresses patient safety concerns in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Maintains cleanliness of medical equipment as necessary.
  • Delivers linens to various units upon request.
  • Accurately gathers and documents patient information (vital signs, intake and output, blood sugar levels, weights, etc.) in compliance with hospital documentation standards to ensure a comprehensive patient record.
  • Conducts and records vital signs, EKGs, and phlebotomy under the supervision of a licensed nurse, assisting interdisciplinary staff with patient procedures as required.
  • Utilizes Epic EHR for thorough documentation of all relevant patient care.
  • In conjunction with the licensed nurse, reinforces patient education and provides basic care instructions to patients and their families.
  • Adheres to hospital and nursing competencies and care standards, maintaining proficiency in various technical skills, including EKGs and blood glucose monitoring, as well as Heartsaver CPR and AED skills.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Nursing Assistant, EMT, or current Nursing Student who has completed Fundamentals of Nursing or an equivalent clinical rotation.
  • AHA Heartsaver CPR/AED certification required.
  • Experience as an emergency medical technician, patient care assistant, or nursing student preferred.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to pass clinical competency assessments, including basic math and reading tests.
  • Proficient in basic math calculations and measurements, including height, weight, intake and output, and calorie counts.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations accurately.
  • Physical capability to manage heavy loads throughout the assigned shift.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to prioritize and efficiently complete assigned tasks.
