Job Summary

The Phlebotomist I is a vital member of our healthcare team, responsible for collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional medical environment. This role requires a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect patient specimens using venipuncture, fingerstick, and heelstick techniques, following established procedures and protocols.
  • Determine the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, and other specimen collections, ensuring timely transport and processing of all patient specimens.
  • File patient lab reports, requisition charges for the business office, and send reports to outside hospitals and clinics, maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Perform complex specimen set-up, enter complex orders and results, pack and ship infectious materials, and communicate special situations related to specimens or testing with staff and management.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, recording daily temperatures and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Assist in the training of new associates and students, and act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician) or PBT (Phlebotomy Technician) certification preferred.
  • Six months of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Regular attendance and ability to work at other SCL sites required.
Physical Requirements

Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others, requiring verbal communication and understanding of spoken information.

Operate complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy, requiring ability to move fingers and hands.

See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents.

Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart.

Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work.

Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
