Phlebotomy Specialist

The Phlebotomist I is a vital member of our medical team, responsible for collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional environment. This role requires a high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) according to established protocols, identifying patients using two patient identifiers and labeling specimens accurately.
- Determine the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc. specimen collections, collecting and receiving specimens into the laboratory utilizing computer protocols, including processing, preparation, centrifugation, aliquot, and routing of specimens.
- File patients' lab reports, requisition charges for the business office, and send reports to outside hospitals and clinics, posting charges and reconciling invoices as needed.
- Investigate complex bills, research and resolve any questionable patient orders, and enter patient demographic data accurately.
- Maintain required lab records and logs, collect statistics for reports, and perform other clerical duties as directed by the manager.
- Perform complex specimen set-up, enter complex orders and results, pack and ship infectious materials, and communicate any special situations related to specimens or testing with all appropriate staff and management.
- Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, recording daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas and ordering supplies as needed.
- Assist in the training of new associates and students, act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory, and perform patient registration and test ordering as appropriate.
- Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately, utilizing equipment according to departmental guidelines and maintaining all equipment as per guidelines.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area, dispose of waste appropriately, clean bench areas and equipment, and restock supplies as necessary.
- Promote the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abide by service behavior standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician) AMT or PBT (Phlebotomy Technician) ASCP certification is preferred.
- Six (6) months of laboratory experience is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others requiring the ability to verbally communicate information and understand spoken information.
- Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy.
- See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents.
- Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart.
- Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work.
- Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
