Job Title: Building Inspector II

Join the City of Racine, WI team as a Building Inspector II, responsible for ensuring compliance with city and state building, zoning, and related codes.

Job Summary:

The Building Inspector II will perform inspections and enforcement of residential, commercial, and industrial properties to secure compliance with city and state building, zoning, and related codes under the supervision of the Chief Building Inspector and/or Building Inspector III.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Examine plans and specifications for residential and commercial building construction and alterations, determining whether they satisfy the provisions of the building code and approving or denying applications for building permits.
  • Inspect construction of various projects at different stages of progress, including excavations, footings, foundations, walls, and roofs, and issue Final Certificates of Inspection.
  • Perform inspections and notify owners of violations of the City Building and Zoning Ordinances, securing compliance with these ordinances.
  • Enforce the City of Racine zoning and development ordinances, making investigations and decisions regarding zoning complaints.
  • Work closely with the Zoning Administrator and the Planning Division to gain compliance with conditions of Conditional Use Permits.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
Requirements:
  • A high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Associate's degree in architectural or engineering technology preferred, or a combination of education and work experience may be accepted.
  • At least three years of relevant construction trade experience, including carpentry, masonry, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
  • A valid Wisconsin driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • State of Wisconsin Certification for Uniform Dwelling Code Construction Inspector, Uniform Dwelling Code HVAC Inspector, and Commercial Building Inspector at time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of construction management and the sequencing of a construction project.
  • Knowledge of ordinances, laws, and regulations relative to building construction, maintenance, and zoning.
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques used in building construction.
  • Ability to recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions created by deterioration.
  • Ability to read and interpret building construction plans and specifications and to recognize deviations from such plans in the construction process.
  • Ability to explain and enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and ability to work with computers and Microsoft software, including electronic permitting software.
