The Nursing Administrative Leader is entrusted with the administrative oversight of the hospital during the absence of senior management.

This role serves as the in-house administrator, consulting with the hospital administrator as necessary.

The individual is accountable for managing nursing services and ensuring the quality and safety of nursing care throughout the organization.

The Nursing Supervisor integrates responsibilities involving staff management, patient/family/visitor relations, and interdepartmental clinical and non-clinical operations to guarantee quality, safe patient care and effective departmental functioning.

The individual oversees patient flow and bed assignments across Penn Medicine Princeton Health and coordinates inter-hospital transfers.

In collaboration with the on-call administrator, they initiate the incident command center and appropriately reallocate resources in response to crises or demands.


Key Responsibilities:

Key Duties:

Alerts Nursing Leadership and the on-call Administrator regarding any actual or developing patient/visitor or staff issues requiring immediate intervention to avert harm or disruption of hospital operations that could adversely affect patient safety or care.

Demonstrates awareness of situations necessitating legal, risk, and public relations input and acts accordingly.

Acts as a resource and liaison, effectively engaging with physicians, staff, patients, and significant others to address and document concerns.

Provides management through the interpretation and accessibility of nursing and hospital policies and procedures. Maintains awareness of regulatory standards from Joint Commission, CMS, DOH, and others to support patient care. Participates in the formulation of nursing strategic plans and annual operational objectives. Facilitates consistent communication regarding hospital and nursing operations through unit-based and departmental rounds. Responds to urgent situations (e.g., Rapid Response, Code Stroke, Code Blue, Code Red, etc.). Coordinates and/or assists with organ procurement. Engages in Shared Governance councils/co-councils as a leader/co-leader or participant. Staffing

Key Duties:

Assesses the mix and quantity of nursing personnel required to deliver safe, quality patient care for the overall unit operation and for each shift daily, based on patient needs, staffing matrix, and staff competencies.

Reallocates staff as necessary to ensure safe, quality care across the nursing organization. Adjusts staffing as needed while considering financial objectives. Assigns companions as necessary to ensure patient safety. Identifies patients at risk for elopement and appropriately assigns resources and designated units. Collects sick/FMLA calls and adjusts staffing accordingly. Observes trends and issues and communicates them to the Nurse Manager. Actively participates in staffing analysis for weekend coverage and communicates trends to Directors of Nursing/CNO. Ensures balanced and appropriate staffing across the nursing organization. Plays a crucial role in bed coordination and allocation during surge alerts. Notifies the nurse manager of staffing needs that cannot be addressed daily through the staffing office. Provides direct patient care as clinically competent and indirect patient care/support as needed in appropriate/emergent situations. Human Resources/Organizational Management Evaluates the performance of unit personnel and communicates with Nurse Managers/Educators. Identifies staff learning needs and, as appropriate, participates in developing shift-specific education and evaluation. Recognizes potential disciplinary issues (performance, behavior, attendance/punctuality), disciplines as necessary, and communicates/follows up with the Nurse Manager.

Engages in managing staff diversion concerns and potential incapacity in the absence of departmental leadership.

Holds staff accountable for quality, safe patient care through adherence to approved policies and procedures. Participates in staff and peer evaluations, providing feedback and opportunities for improvement.

Bed Flow/Coordination:
Oversees bed coordination and allocation throughout the hospital. Communicates census and bed flow plans daily during huddles.

Coordinates and communicates patient admissions to unit-based nurse leadership and removes barriers to expedite flow and ensure timely admissions.

Collaborates and assigns beds for transfers from other hospitals to Penn Medicine Princeton Health. Determines and communicates the need to hold patients in non-bedded units (e.g., TCU, PACU, post-procedure areas, etc.) based on census and discharges.

Qualifications:
Registered Nurse - NJ (Required) Registered Professional Nurse, issued by the N.J. State Board of Nursing.

National Certification in specialty area preferred Basic Cardiac Life Support (Required)

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Required) Education or Equivalent Experience:
Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)
