POSITION SUMMARY:
The role involves assisting in the assessment and treatment of patients by managing patient data, documenting medical records, aiding in office procedures and testing, administering medications, and educating patients and their families. Responsibilities are carried out under the supervision of qualified clinical staff and providers as detailed in the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Welcomes and guides patients and visitors to examination areas.
- Identifies and records the purpose of the visit; applies analytical skills to determine if patient information necessitates further follow-up.
- Conducts initial screening in accordance with protocols established by the supervising healthcare provider; gathers information to complete the necessary electronic medical record templates.
- Measures and accurately records patient vital signs in the electronic medical record, including pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, height, and weight; calculates and documents Body Mass Index (BMI).
- Inputs medication, laboratory, and radiology orders into the electronic medical record following state, local, and professional guidelines.
- Executes diagnostic tests as instructed by the healthcare provider, which may include operating equipment for routine tests.
- Conducts basic Gaps in Care assessments.
- Credentialed staff may perform tuberculosis testing.
- Monitors and communicates laboratory and diagnostic test results to patients as directed by the provider, ensuring adherence to office protocols.
- Administers prescribed medications and facilitates prescription renewals as per healthcare provider directives.
- Handles general specimen collection tasks (including blood, urine, throat swabs, etc.) and assists with other office procedures as needed, following all safety protocols.
- Engages in disease management initiatives under the guidance of the Care Manager or Nurse Manager.
- Contributes to enhancing practice performance on quality incentives, including but not limited to Provider Dashboard and Health Plan incentives.
- Provides education to patients and families as directed by the healthcare provider.
- Records and communicates accurate messages in a timely manner.
- Acts as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers when necessary, ensuring prompt and courteous follow-up on patient inquiries.
- Participates in required meetings and committees as requested.
- Supports other offices and attends training sessions as assigned.
- Performs additional duties as assigned within the scope of Medical Assistant certification.

MEASUREMENT OF SUCCESS:
Performance is evaluated based on adherence to organizational values and expectations as outlined in the performance review documentation.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program and externship or equivalent training.
CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: Certification as a Medical Assistant is preferred or current licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic in the State of Michigan. Valid CPR certification is required.
EXPERIENCE: 0-1 year of clinical experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. In the absence of completed MA training, 2+ years of clinical experience in a community-based clinic is required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates within a medical facility, requiring regular movement throughout the premises and interaction with patients and medical equipment. Exposure to various health-related materials and situations is inherent to the role.
