Lexington Park, Maryland, United States Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory Full time
Position OverviewRole Summary

Are you interested in contributing to the advancement of our Nation's defense capabilities?

Do you aspire to enhance the Department of the Navy's cutting-edge tactical strike weapon systems?

If so, we invite you to consider joining our team at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL)

We are in search of a seasoned and driven Lead Systems Architect to assist in defining, designing, integrating, testing, and evaluating both current and future advanced strike weapon systems. As a trusted partner for the Government, we deliver comprehensive life-cycle systems engineering, modeling and simulation, and analysis of the Nation's leading tactical weapon systems.

As a vital member of our team, you will represent APL by providing direct systems engineering support to our Government partners and coordinating engineering efforts with APL team members to address the technical requirements of the programs.

As a Lead Systems Architect, your responsibilities will include...
  • Conducting systems engineering tasks such as initial concept development, leading trade studies, formulating system-level requirements and architectures, planning system verification, optimizing overall system performance, and performing risk assessments.
  • Collaborating with Government partners to determine how APL's technical expertise can be leveraged to tackle their most challenging technical and operational issues.
  • Acting as the primary liaison between the Government partner and APL's technical and project management teams.
  • Engaging with industry, academic, and Government laboratory personnel to identify emerging technologies that can enhance weapon system capabilities for the warfighter.
  • Documenting analysis and engineering outcomes, preparing reports, and establishing material requirements for sponsors. This includes organizing study teams, ensuring the quality of technical deliverables, and developing and presenting associated technical briefs.

Qualifications

You meet our essential qualifications for this role if you...
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical discipline.
  • Possess a minimum of five years of relevant experience in systems engineering principles and practices, enabling significant contributions and leadership in complex systems development.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with Government partner representatives.
  • Are willing and able to travel periodically to collaborate with prime contractors and Government laboratories and provide technical guidance during new system development and modifications.
  • Can obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately achieve a TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will undergo a government security clearance investigation and must meet the criteria for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
You'll exceed our minimum requirements if you...
  • Possess a Master's degree or higher in Systems Engineering, Operations Research/Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Have substantial professional experience specifically related to NAVAIR weapon systems development and acquisition.
  • Bring prior military experience in tactical weapons planning and deployment.
  • Have knowledge and experience with Planning, Programming and Budgeting, Acquisition Process/Lifecycle, Research and Development, and Test and Evaluation of DoD Systems.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interface effectively with Government partners.
  • Hold an active TS/SCI clearance.
