Safe Place for Youth (SPY) is a premier organization dedicated to assisting youth who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness in West Los Angeles. Established in 2011, SPY provides trauma-informed, accessible programs aimed at helping young individuals transition from homelessness to stability, enabling them to thrive. Our comprehensive services include outreach, drop-in support, health and wellness initiatives, case management, educational and employment resources, and housing assistance.

Role Summary:

The Access Center Youth Advocate will play a vital role in the Department of Mental Health Initiative, acting as a leader in advocating for healthy and equitable communities. In this position, you will support the holistic development of youth through various services and activities, employing an equity-centered community design to assist those who have experienced trauma.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Implementation (50%):
    • Build genuine, supportive relationships with SPY members, enhancing their understanding of available resources during drop-in hours.
    • Organize and lead group activities and workshops that foster community engagement and promote wellness.
    • Facilitate effective communication among members, case managers, and service partners.
    • Advocate for SPY members in accessing mental health services, assisting them in overcoming barriers to care.
    • Raise health awareness through community education initiatives.
    • Perform additional duties as necessary to support the program's mission.
  • Community Outreach (30%):
    • Serve as the primary contact for community partners and resource providers, ensuring effective service delivery.
    • Engage with West Los Angeles neighborhoods by participating in community meetings and discussions.
    • Create and implement resources and workshops focused on community wellness and healing.
  • Administrative Duties (20%):
    • Maintain accurate documentation of activities and service plans in accordance with organizational policies.
    • Participate in required internal and external meetings.
    • Input data into relevant systems for tracking purposes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of experience in social services or a related field is required.
  • Experience providing direct services to high-risk youth, including counseling and advocacy, is essential.
  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction practices.
  • Strong commitment to the mission and values of SPY.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work respectfully with diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with technology and social media platforms.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Work Environment:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and computer work.
  • Adaptability to various environments, including office and outdoor settings.
