Job Title: Ski Patrol Team Member

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our Ski Patrol team. As a Ski Patrol Team Member, you will be responsible for monitoring mountain areas for injured, lost, or reckless skiers and snowboarders, providing first aid and other necessary assistance, enforcing company skiing safety regulations, and performing various trail maintenance tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Stand by, sharpening and always enhancing skills whilst making ready for emergency medical support. Assist with dispatch duties and sorting out the on-going priorities at hand.
  • On equipment Patrol duties on assigned mountain areas regularly to ensure that all trails are properly marked, to identify injured, lost, out of control and reckless skiers and snowboarders; to identify existing or potential skiing hazards and to monitor and report on weather/skiing conditions, skiing traffic and the like.
  • Lead the safe skiing initiative by example and through positive initiatives and actions. When necessary, detain reckless skiers or snowboarders and utilize creative methods to enforce safe sliding, including taking of appropriate disciplinary action. Assist with educational efforts related to safe skiing/riding.
  • Perform a variety of trail maintenance tasks, check trails for hazards, missing signs; put up signs and mark hazards; install new or replace down roping or fencing as necessary; cut brush; pack down and shovel snow; open and close trails properly when necessary.
  • Perform trail opening and closing and daily maintenance procedures as required or assigned.
  • Search for missing persons and equipment when required.
  • Support Patrol or other organized racing activities and special events.
  • Administer emergency care/first aid to injured patrons, including skiers and snowboarders; assess condition of and stabilize patient, render appropriate treatment, such as wound care, splinting and stabilization, transport to base area in a toboggan, if necessary.
  • Transport uninjured skiers or snowboarders who are having difficulty or have lost or damaged equipment to base area by toboggan or snowmobile.
  • Answer questions, give directions, etc.
  • Must be able to ski or snowboard all terrain in all types of conditions. Medical skills and certifications such as EMT, or OEC certificate or greater. Plus CPR/AED.
  • Facilities emergency and non-emergency communication:
    • Uses phones and radios to transmit and receive operational and emergency information
    • Handles and prioritizes multiple simultaneous communication demands
    • Switches between tasks quickly and effectively while maintaining composure
    • Relays information promptly and clearly to the First-Aid Room Foreman or another team leader on duty
    • Requests and communicates with EMS and other outside agencies
    • Routes wrong-number callers to the correct destination
  • Communicates professionally and effectively with guests, coworkers, vendors, and community members:
    • Works to find answers to all guests questions
    • Requests assistance with difficult interactions
    • Works as an effective and professional part of a team; contributes positive and respectful energy to the group dynamic
  • Assists with daily paperwork for completeness:
    • Reviews daily paperwork for completeness
    • Organizes and files daily paperwork
    • Constructs timelines and other additional documentation as needed
  • Ensures dispatch office is clean and well-stocked; assists with keeping the first-aid room clean and stocked
  • Ensures their own personal hygiene is maintained consistent with the medical and professional environment
  • Assists with minor administrative projects as directed
  • Understands the traumatic stress felt by first responders, is willing to have open conversations following significant incidents, watches for signs of traumatic stress among coworkers, and takes action to help
  • Proactively participates in Continuous Quality Improvement efforts:
    • Openly and honestly debriefs significant incidents in a group setting, sharing areas of success and ideas for possible improvements
    • Invites and receives feedback professionally
    • Reports safety and quality concerns immediately and discretely
  • Develops and maintains a thorough knowledge of the mountain and other resort departments and operations:
    • Knows the trail map and current trail status
    • Knows the location of all Patrol resources
    • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships with members of other departments and develops and understanding of their processes
    • Familiar with major buildings and structures was well as overall resort property layout
    • Strives to develop an understanding of the internal layout of all major buildings
  • Promptly reports any department needs of issues to a team leader
  • Follows policies and procedures set within the Ski Patrol SOPs the Patrol Handbook, and the Highlands Team Member Handbook
  • Assists in guiding and teaching less-experienced staff in all of the above
Requirements:
  • Experience working in a multi-tasking environment with telephones, radios, and computers
  • Experience working as a Ski Patroller
  • Experience working in the customer service or hospitality industry
  • Experience in healthcare, especially in the emergency setting
  • Holds EMT, WFR, OEC certification or greater at time of hire. Within the first 2 seasons, attains and maintains current Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certification (Required for non-essential functions)
  • Lifts and carries up to 10 lbs. in various forms; up to 60 lbs. for Nonessential functions
  • Nonessential functions may require physical management and support of patients when needed for safety
  • Moves safely across floors that may be wet or slippery due to the active winter work environment; Nonessential functions may require safe movement over terrain that may be uneven, icy, or even covered in deep, soft snow
  • Sees and responds to dangerous situations
  • Hears and responds quickly to sounds
  • Speaks respectfully with persons of all ages and of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds
  • Reads and writes standard English text
  • Uses a computer and tablet for significant periods of time
  • Remains in a stationary position, whether sitting or standing, for significant periods of time
  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and / or related office equipment
  • Must have the manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, flexibility, and body and limb coordination necessary to answer phones and radios and to speak while simultaneously writing or typing
  • Physical exertion is generally mild/sedentary but may be more significant with Nonessential Functions
