Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Hospital Coder Specialist to join our team at Ochsner Health. As a key member of our coding team, you will be responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10 codes and ensuring data integrity of coded patient records.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assign ICD-10 codes within established coding guidelines, rules, and regulations.
  • Review medical documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness of coded patient records.
  • Act as a resource for colleagues and management, providing coding expertise and guidance.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Documentation Improvement team to ensure accurate DRG assignment.
  • Work closely with management to resolve problems and meet deadlines.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accredited coding program with certification preferred.
  • 3 years of coding experience required.
  • Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals.
  • Computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
  • Knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, and coding principles.
  • Excellent decision-making, problem-solving, analytical, and quality management skills.
Working Conditions

This is a light work position that requires occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds and frequent sitting. The incumbent will work in a healthcare setting with no occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases. However, there may be an occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment.
