Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Facilities Maintenance Technician to join our team at the Museum of Science. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining buildings and related structures, inspecting and determining the need for carpentry repairs or alterations, and supporting the department in its operation and upkeep of the facility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Repair, replace, and modify building elements, including doors, door locks and hardware, cabinetry, shelving, walls, stairs, ramps, and floors.
  • Inspect buildings to determine the need for carpentry repairs or alterations, estimate job duration and cost, and report results to management.
  • Interpret and/or draw up sketches, patterns, blueprints, instructions, and/or layouts of work to be done.
  • Perform structural repair, alteration, or improvement work, including modifications to ceiling systems, preparing surfaces for paint or cement work, studding, plastering walls and cracks in floors or around windows, taping joints on sheetrock, and cementing and/or replacing counter tops.
  • Perform related work, such as framing pictures, making window screens, crafting signs, ordering materials, sharpening and tempering tools and equipment, and conferring with museum staff and department heads.
  • Operate lifts and install staging as required for safe access to related work.
  • Respond to emergency incidents and situations on the property that may be a threat to the safety of staff, guests, and property.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 4 or more years of carpentry, building, and/or construction trade experience.
  • Skill in using handheld power tools, such as saws, drills, pneumatic nailers, etc.
  • Knowledge of small handheld tools, such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, chisels, drills, etc., and expertise in their use.
  • Comfort working outdoors and in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and draw and/or interpret sketches.
  • Working knowledge in the use of or the ability to learn Electronic Work Order Systems.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
