Job Overview

Position Summary:

A Personal Care Assistant (PCA) is an essential member of the home health care team, providing support to clients with daily living activities as outlined in a personalized care plan established by a Registered Nurse Supervisor. The PCA operates under the guidance of the RN Supervisor, Home Care Field Supervisor, and/or Staff Coordinator, ensuring that clients receive the highest standard of care in their homes.

Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of a PCA may encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Preparing and planning meals tailored to the specific dietary needs of the client.
  2. Maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy living environment through light housekeeping tasks, including changing bed linens, dusting, vacuuming, and laundry.
  3. Offering companionship and engagement for the client through activities such as reading and walks, as well as accompanying them to medical appointments.
  4. Assisting with grocery shopping and running errands as required.
  5. Providing personal care services, including assistance with toileting, hair care, oral hygiene, bathing, and grooming.
  6. Supporting mobility for clients using assistive devices like walkers.
  7. Carrying out additional housekeeping duties as specified in the care plan.
  8. Participating in mandatory in-service education programs, with a requirement of 20 hours annually.
  9. Completing six-topic annual training as mandated.

Prohibited Actions:

  1. Clients' fingernails or toenails must not be cut.
  2. Heavy housework tasks such as cleaning stoves with harsh chemicals, moving heavy furniture, shoveling snow, or climbing ladders are not permitted.

Qualifications:

  1. A PCA must successfully complete the agency's employment process.
  2. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  3. Candidates must be physically capable of performing the duties associated with this role.
  4. Demonstrating mature and responsible behavior, along with an understanding of client confidentiality, is essential.
  5. Proficiency in reading, writing, understanding, and speaking English is required.
  6. Ability to follow instructions and accurately report any changes in the client's condition to the RN Supervisor/Staff Coordinator is necessary.
  7. An active driver's license and a reliable vehicle for transportation to assignments are mandatory.
