Job Title: Director of City Planning

Join the City of Decatur, AL team as a Director of City Planning, responsible for providing professional planning support for city operations. This role involves coordinating activities with various stakeholders, contributing to the complexity of the position.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the provision of professional planning support for city development activities.
  • Direct and coordinate the implementation of the city's master plan and public interests.
  • Plan, supervise, and participate in the development and updating of the City's comprehensive plan and other planning studies.
  • Review and evaluate proposed subdivision layouts, preliminary plans, site plans, and subdivision construction plans for compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare regular and special reports, planning recommendations, and presentations for the Technical Review Committee, Planning Commission, and City Council.
  • Manage major projects or complex planning problems, coordinating preparation, review, and implementation of planning work with other city departments, property owners, and jurisdictions.
  • Research zoning and subdivision topics, formulate policy, and draft amendments to the zoning ordinance, zoning maps, and subdivision regulations.
  • Assist in preparing Zoning Adjustment and Planning Commission agenda minutes and public notices.
  • Review annexation, subdivision, and zoning matters, consult with applicants, and oversee the notification and review process.
  • Train, assign, direct, supervise, develop, evaluate, and coach department personnel.
  • Participate in preparing comprehensive reports based on research and study of planning challenges.
  • Ensure a collaborative, cooperative, and customer-oriented department culture.
Requirements:
  • BS degree in Urban/Regional Planning and Development, Public Administration, or related field, or equivalent work experience and knowledge.
  • 10+ years of experience in a similar position, including prior supervisory and management experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, Adobe, and departmental systems or software programs.
  • AICP certification and willingness to complete Continuing Education Courses.
  • Valid Driver's License and residency within the Decatur city limits (highly desirable).
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of urban planning principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of city codes, zoning regulations, and subdivision ordinances.
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, city ordinances, and department policies.
  • Skills in problem-solving, prioritizing, planning, interpersonal relations, oral and written communication, and technical writing.
