Job Summary:

The Senior Credit and Collections Specialist is responsible for coordinating and following through on collecting payments, reducing past due, bad debt exposure, and other quantitative targets. This role involves performing portfolio management activities for a customer base of key accounts, including:

  • Managing day-to-day activities in a fast-paced environment to ensure effective account management on collection accounts.
  • Contacting customers with past due balances via phone and email to obtain payment, payment commitment, and follow up on payment promises.
  • Reporting any disputed/short paid invoices with reasons for disputes and collaborating with the internal department to expedite resolution/payment.
  • Performing customer account reconciliation, including support to the cash application team for clearing customer payments and credit items.
  • Interfaces with Sales, Operations, and other departments to resolve billing, collection, and credit issues.
  • Establishing strong working relationships with the sales team to support collections efforts.
  • Preparing proposals for third-party agency placement and/or write-off to bad debt.
  • Supporting and developing accounts receivable process improvements.
  • Processing new customer credit applications, researching customers' financials, organizational, and payment history using credit reference letters and credit reports.
  • Training new hires.
  • Performing other duties/projects as assigned or required by the position.
  • Achieving individual goals and established KPIs.
Requirements:

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience and 3+ years of relevant experience required, preferably in a shared service environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A professional candidate with a strong collections background and a customer service/retention mindset.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Outlook, Excel (Vlookup and pivot tables).
  • Understanding of PCI (payment card industry) compliance.
  • Understanding of regulatory procedures and steps required to file bankruptcy proof of claim and place delinquent accounts with third-party collection agencies.
  • Ability to function well independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Experience within the waste industry is beneficial but not required.
  • Excellent multitasking skills.
