Job Summary

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF provides a comprehensive range of services for patients cared for by the Medical Center at UCSF and its providers and payors.

These services include, but are not limited to:

  • drug procurement, storage, and security
  • safe, accurate and timely preparation and distribution of drugs
  • clinical pharmacy services for patients
  • development of drug use policies within the Medical Center
  • drug information services for clinicians and patients
  • participation in technology assessment and quality assurance programs

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services is affiliated with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy, an academic department within the School of Pharmacy, which has primary responsibility for teaching professional courses in the Pharm.D. curriculum, clinical research, and public and clinical service.

As a Staff Pharmacist II - Acute Care Float Pool, you will provide pharmaceutical care to patients at all acute care pharmacy locations within the UCSF Health System.

You may also be asked to participate in pharmaceutical care in other sectors of the Department of Pharmaceutical Services as needed.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • obtaining medication histories
  • reviewing and assessing medication profiles
  • providing drug information to patients and health care providers
  • collaborating with clinicians on drugs of choice and therapeutic plans
  • ensuring access to medications
  • educating patients on the proper use of medications
  • ensuring that patients understand cautions, adverse reactions, and interactions related to their therapy

You will be part of an interprofessional team consisting of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other professionals.

Your primary work location will be in the inpatient pharmacy setting, managing specific patient populations as needed.

Depending on the assigned shift and site, you may also oversee pharmacy technicians to facilitate insurance authorizations for medications, as well as prepare and dispense prescription medications and pharmaceutical products for patient care.

You may also be responsible for the oversight of clinical activities and delivery of services.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services at UCSF has long been nationally recognized as one of the founding fathers for clinical pharmacy services, which was established in 1965.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) or equivalent degree as determined by the National Board of Pharmacy

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, or at least 3 years of inpatient/operational pharmacy experience
  • Hold an advanced practice board certification (e.g., Board of Pharmacy Specialty certificates, AAHIVP, etc.)

License/Certification

  • Must possess a current license in good standing to practice pharmacy in the State of California
  • Current certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
