Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant

About the Position
We are seeking a highly skilled Cardiac Surgery Physician Assistant to join our team at Boston Medical Center. As a key member of our cardiac surgery team, you will work closely with attending physicians to provide high-quality patient care and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with attending physicians to admit, evaluate, and treat patients in the in-patient hospital setting for a Cardiothoracic Surgery practice.
- Provide patient care management, reviewing history, performing physical assessments, formulating care plans, and follow-up as needed.
- Order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, perform routine diagnostic studies, including laboratory procedures, radiological studies, and electrocardiograph tracings.
- Assist with surgery, first assisting common cardiac surgery procedures, including CABG, Valve procedures, Aortic procedures, Endoscopic vein harvesting, ECMO cannulation, Impella insertions.
- Present findings to attending physicians, determining treatment plans, documenting treatment plans, and writing appropriate orders.
- Place nasogastric tubes, bladder catheters, central lines, swan Ganz catheters, arterial lines, chest tubes, and remove intra-aortic balloon pumps, arterial and venous sheaths, epicardial pacing wires, and chest tubes.
- Oversee clinical experience, ensuring coordination and consolidation of patient care plans and execution of those plans to deliver excellent cost-effective and efficient patient care.
- Facilitate communication with other departments to ensure delivery of excellent patient care.
- Write orders on patients admitted to the hospital, including medication, labs, diagnostic and therapeutic tests, and nursing activities, authorized to write prescription orders, including narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs.
- Makes rounds to evaluate patients and writes progress reports, consults with physicians or surgeons regarding patient care for complex diagnoses, educates patients and families about preventive care, medical issues, and use of prescribed medical treatments.
- Records and maintains legible, accurate, and confidential patient medical records, facilitating transitions of care from inpatient to outpatient settings.
- Ensures treatment and consultations consistent with NCQA, TJC, and federal and state regulatory standards, professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and workshops.
Requirements
- Qualifications include holding a Bachelor's degree and being a graduate of a PA Program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. (ARC-PA) or its predecessor.
- National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE eligibility and eligible for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts are required, along with documentation of Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification upon hire.
- Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA Controlled Substance Registration may be required if prescribing medications is included in clinical duties and privileges.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in Cardiac surgery is recommended, as well as Endoscopic vein harvesting.
- Self-directed individuals demonstrating initiative and professionalism, exercising expert clinical judgment to function independently, are preferred.
About the Salary
The estimated salary for this position is $110,000-$140,000 per year, based on the location and industry standards.
